Notes for Women

Mr and Mrs A. S. Russell, Park street, are visitors to Stewart Island. Mrs W. Swale, Limehills, is visiting Christchurch. Miss Rita Daniels, Auckland, who has been the guest of Mrs A. S. Russell, Park street, returns north this week. Miss Dorothy Jenkins, Timaru, who has been spending a few days at the Grand Hotel for the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Isaac Jenkins, will return home today. There were six tables at play at the meeting of the Bridge Circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Monday night. The prizewinners were Mrs T. E. Davis, Mrs W. S. Todd, and Miss J. McLeod. Miss Marjorie Hutton, formerly of Invercargill, was recently the guest of honour at a number of parties in Wellington before her marriage to Mr Guy Newton, an officer In the R.N.Z.A.F. Miss Sheila Macdonald was one of the bridesmaids. Mrs W. Orr, Balfour, acting Dominion president of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, has returned home. While in the north Mrs Orr visited and addressed 17 branches of the W.D.F.U. Mrs Orr was the guest of Dr and Mrs Milne, Lower Hutt. Mr and Mrs Jordan, Lowry Bay, Mrs W. H. Lane, Kaeo. and Colonel and Mrs Noel Adams, Clevedon. The Waiklwl branch of the Womens Division of the Farmers’ Union held a successful eighth birthday party. Mrs A. Waters presided over a large attendance of members and friends. Items were given by the following:—Songs, Mesdames France, Wilson, MacGregor, Tomlinson and Miss Wilson; duet, Mesdames O. Harris and R. MacGregor; recitation. Miss R. Johnson; dance. Miss Broad; action song, Master L. Harris; violin solo, Miss M. Robertson; pianoforte solo, Miss J. Waters. Miss Joy Waters acted as accompanist. A fancy dress parade was staged. Mrs McKay won the first prize and Mrs Broad the second. Shoulder sprays were presented to Mrs Waters and to Mrs I. M. Kennard, who cut the cake. Mrs M. A. Wilson lit the candles and Miss J. Waters extinguished them.
