HEAVY FIGHTING NEAR LINCHWAN
(P.A.) CHUNGKING, August 10. Fierce fighting continues unabated on the outskirts of Linchwan, which is completely surrounded, says a communique. Some points changed hands 10 times.
United States planes. bombed the waterfront at Haiphong, in Indo-China, causing extensive damage. They scored hits on steamers in port. General Joseph W. Stilwell’s headquarters reveal that a direct hit was scored on a 4000-ton steamer, that a large oil fire was started in the docks end that all bombs landed on the target area. After the bombers had released their’ loads the escorting planes ma-chine-gunned the docks. The complete lack of opposition indicates that the enemy was taken by surprise
