GENERAL TOJO TRIES TO BECOME SHOGUN
NEW YORK, August 10.
General Hideki Tojo, Prime Minister of Japan, is striving to establish himself as dictator, says Robert Bellaire, former manager of the United Press of America at Tokyo. He adds that General Tojo has made the Emperor Hirohito a virtual prisoner in the Imperial Palace and has even denied him access to the daily newspapers. General Tojo is endeavouring to build up personal popularity as a means of becoming Japan’s Shogun with power eclipsing that of the Emperor. General Tojo’s picture appears daily in the newspapers, showing him kissing babies, talking to young students and even assisting elderly women across the street.
Mr Bellaire saw General Tojo at the opening of the Diet and he was struck by the cocksure, almost defiant, manner with which Tojo treated the Emperor.
