STRONG OPPOSITION IN SOLOMONS
SOME SUCCESS ENJOYED BY ALLIES (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, August 11. There are signs that the Allied forces which began an attack on the Japanese-occupied Solomon Islands four days ago are meeting with some success, in spite of extremely heavy land and air opposition. The main thrust is against Tulagi, but it is considered certain that the Allies will have attacked Guadalcanar. The Japanese have strong air forces in the Solomons and the Allies are meeting strong opposition from land-based bombers.
There is a report that United States Marines are participating. High Marine officials said it was well known that the Marines were specially trained for amphibious operations and were stationed in that general area. However, so far they were unable to reveal whether dr not they had participated in this specific action. These Marines have self-propelled landing boats, also tanks and artillery.
