GORE NEWS

PARCELS APPRECIATED— SeveraI letters from soldiers serving overseas, acknowledging receipt of parcels and expressing appreciation of the work being done by the patriotic committees, were received at a meeting of the Gore Patriotic Committee. It was reported that Gore's effort for the current year had raised £2938. The town’s quota was £3843. A sub-committee was set up to deal with the question of securing the balance of the money. The chairman (Mr W. D. Shelton), in reporting on the arrangements made for the collection of waste paper, said that the committee’s two volunteer helpers, Messrs Ayson and Oliff, were doing excellent work. It was hoped that increasingly large quantities of paper would be received. CENSUS BEING TAKEN—A census is at present being taken of the accommodation available for evacuees in the Gore borough area. A circular, which requires the householder to state the number of rooms, the number of normal occupants, the number of spare beds, and the number of evacuees that could be accommodated allowing for floor space only for sleeping, will be delivered to each householder in the area within the next few days. As powers have been taken in the Gore borough area for the compulsory accommodation of evacuees, if necessary, all householders must fill in the form. It should be noted that each evacuee should carry food sufficient for 24 hours, blankets and eating utensils. GOLF.— A stroke match conducted by the Gore Golf Club on its links at Croydon was won by W. F. Young, who played two strokes under his handicap and returned a card of 93-21-72. J. P. Bishop was runnerup with a card of 91-15-76.
