Late News NOVOROSSISK IN DANGER

RUSSIAN REAR MAY BE THREATENED (Rec. 2.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 10. The progressive deterioration on the southern Russian front continues unchecked. The danger to Novorossisk is now very great. If it is lost the consequences will be severe, as neither Tuapse nor Batum is capable of basing a fleet. Therefore, the sea road to Georgia will be opened for the Germans operating from Rumania and the Crimea, where it is known they have assembled a formidable fleet of invasion barges and torpedo-boats. FieldMarshal Siegmund List is reported to be commanding an invasion army in Rumania awaiting orders to strike. Thus Field-Marshal von Bock’s sweep to the coast opens up disquieting possibilities of attacking the rear of the Russian defences in the Caucasian Mountains besides the threat of cutting off large Russian armies north of Novorossisk. GENERAL GOTT KILLED LONDON, August 10. The Daily Telegraph says LieutenantGeneral W. H. Gott, has been killed in action in Libya. Lieutenant-General Gott, who was known as “The Straffer” was aged 45 years. He was one of the youngest generals in the army. He commanded the 7th Armoured Division and probably' knew more about the Western Desert than any other senior British officer.
