Sporting BASHFUL LADY’S RECORD
EIGHT WINS AND £1663 IN STAKES Bashful Lady won the most important race of her comparatively short racing career when she took the Winter Cup in easy style at Riccarton on Saturday, ine Gore-trained mare has been racing less than 18 months, but in that period she has won eight races and £1663 in stakes. She has been a good racing proposition for Mr JBurnett, who was anxious to sell her betoie she was raced. ~ , Bashful Lady has had an eventful career in more ways than one. At the Dunedin winter meeting last year she had her first start in the Trial Stakes in which she ran third to Kohara and Milton Abbas. She improved on that form two days later and won the Novice Handicap. That was the extent of her racing as a three-year-old. She was next entered for races at the Otago Hunt meeting, but before the weights appeared it was found that she was in f° a F presumably to a Salmagundi colt with whom she had been running in a paddock. She was then thrown out of training and was not brought in again until late last spring. FIVE WINS IN SUCCESSION Bashful Lady's record in the season recently ended is well known. She ran second to a stablemate (Lady Adin) at the Southland New Year meeting; then she ran twice unplaced, the only times in 13 starts (to date) she failed to get a place. She ran oft the course at Winton when she had the field at her mercy, and she finished fourth in the Autumn Handicap. Then, with the Kennels Handicap at the Birchwood Hunt meeting, she began a run of five successes which included the Southern Champion i Hack Handicap at Riverton. She was beaten into second place by Fleet Street at the Dunedin meeting and her four-year-old record closed with five wins and two seconds for £823 in stakes. Her two successes this season, in the Brabazon Handicap and the Winter Cup, have netted £735, making a total of £1663 won in stakes. Bashful Lady is trained by J. R. Cochrane of Gore, who has had much success with mares. She has been ridden by Wilson Ellis in her last seven starts which have produced six firsts and a second. K. R. Ford rode her when she won the Kennels Handicap and R. A. Gibson had the mount when she won her first race (as a three-year-old). She is now a five-year-old mare and is by Paper Money-Lady Blissful. Her record

Erinatlon Urination was having his fifth tilt at the Grand National Steeplechase on Saturday. He was second to Padishah in 1939. Consistent Scratching Sally Lunn has been scratched in five of her last six engagements. The public is beginning to get curious. Lord Glanely’s Stud Many Australian breeders are deploring the fact that they missed a great opportunity to secure valuable colts in England. The Aga Khan decided to sell all his yearling colts, and Mr A. E. Allnatt, a newcomer to the turf, purchased 11 youngsters as a lot for 400. guineas each, writes Sir Modred. Mr Allnatt has now purchased the whole of the stud of the late Lord Glanely for about £lOO,OOO. It was one of the largest studs in England and comprised nearly 140 horses. The executors of Lord Glanely’s estate at first intended to dispose of the stud at auction, but eventually decided to accept the private offer of Mr Allnatt.
