BASKETBALL

REPRESENTATIVE PRACTICE Saturday’s basketball matches were, with few exceptions, even games. Heavy rain earlier in the day left pools of water on some of the courts, which made playing conditions unpleasant. A further match was played between first and second grade representative teams during the afternoon. Judging by the displays by both teams Southland’s chances in the representative match on August 15 are very bright. FIRST GRADE RESULTS Rata beat High School, 19-10. Rata was much too good for its younger and less experienced opponents. In tire first half High School did not play well, the halftime score being 10-3 in Rata’s favour. In the second half High School improved and its shooting was much more accurate. It actually netted only one fewer goal than Rata in the second half. Kew Nurses beat Stuarts, 10-9. This game, was very slow with Stuarts having the better of the play in the first 10 minutes. Molly Adams, in Kew Nurses’ attack third, played a good game and was responsible for most of the scoring. The half-time scores were 7-5 in Kew Nurses’ favour. Play was very slow in the second half and up to a minute before time the scores were 9-9. , . Collegiate, with five representative players, was much too good for Makarewa, whose attacks were inaccurate. Doreen Baird, in centre, played well and Winsome Sadlier, in attack third, showed up well. Second Grade—Woodlands beat Collegiate B, 29-20; Rata beat High School, 21-10; Technical beat St. Mary’s, 27-13; Bluff drew with Collegiate, 8-8; Pirates beat Makarewa 7-4. Third Grade— Rata B won by default from St. Mary’s; Collegiate won by default from Bluff; Kennington won by default from McKenzie’s; Roslyn Bush beat Rata, 17-15; Technical beat Stuarts, 22-3. Fourth Grade—Makarewa beat Collegiate B, 14-6. A second grade representative practice will be held in the skating rink on Tuesday at 7 pan. The following additional players have been selected for the second grade representative team: Forward, D. Robertson- centre, M. McNeill; defence, R. Coote.
