SLAYER RUNS OFF COURSE

BASHFUL LADY’S EASY WIN

(Special) CHRISTCHURCH, August 9. All of the acceptors paraded for the Grand National Steeplechase and there was a close tussle for favouritism between Foxiana and Slayer. Passing the stands the first time Clansman was pacemaker and he led into the back stretch from Gay Boa, Foxiana, Slayer and Dozie Boy. Foxiana headed Clansman with two miles to go, but passing the stands the second time Gay Boa had taken charge and led to Cuits’s fence, where Foxiana again jumped to the front. Clansman then joined him and the pair carried on well clear until Erination ran up to them. After the Kennels Double Erination gradually worked his way into second place and was close up to Foxiana at the last fence with Clansman, Gay Boa, Master Lackham and Valens not far away. Foxiana held his advantage over the fence, but was soon challenged by Erination and the pair drew away to fight out a hard struggle. Erination made a very game attempt, but Foxiana always had him struggling. Valens beat several trlng horses home to be a creditable third two lengths in front of Clansman, who was followed at a gap by Dozie Boy and Master Lackham together, Gay Boa, Cherry Plum and Ruling Star. Slayer disappointed his backers by running off at the carriage paddock brush at the end of a round when in a handy position. Aussie Ra fell at the same fence.

The Sydenham Hurdle Race provided the best display of all-round jumping seen on the course for a long while. Auctor was an early leader and led for most of the journey, but nearing the home turn Noko drew to the front and led into the straight from Kanui Te Pal, Renascor and Auctor, with Alienate moving up in last place, which he had occupied up to that stage. Kanui Te Pai soon ran up to Noko in the run home and the pair settled down to a grim struggle, the former staying on better to gain a bare half-length verdict. Renascor hung on for third, a length in front of Alienate, who put in some telling work over the last furlong. Sally Lunn, who was withdrawn at 10.35 a.m., and Symbol were the only defections from the Winter Cup. When the field had travelled a furlong Don’t Forget went to the front and led into the straight from Bashful Lady, Rakanui, All Night and Compeer. Bashful Lady soon drew to the front in the run to the post and outclassed her pursuers to record one of the easiest wins in the history of the race. Rakanui beat All Night for second money, staying on better. Compeer, who lost some ground rounding the home turn, finished on into fourth place two lengths away, with Palfrey, Gladynev, The Joker, Minority and Poutatau following. Only the four placed horses finished in the Enfield Steeplechase. Roseman, Night Hawk, Benevolent and Wexford Bridge ran off and Sir Hugh and Valantua fell. Authoress led practically throughout. The Cashmere Plate was won decisively by Botany, a three-year-old brother to the speedy Density. Kanui Te Pai has been rehandicapped from 10.0 to 10.4 in the Grand National Hurdles.
