SIX NAZI SABOTEURS ELECTROCUTED
(Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 8. Six of the eight convicted Nazi saboteurs were today executed. Ernest Burger was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour, while George John Dasch was sentenced to 30 years’ imprisonment with hard labour. These two were spared the death sentence because they assisted the Government in the apprehension of the others. The executions, which were carried out with the electric chair, started at noon. The Attorney-General, Mr Francis Biddle, said the trial of the eight saboteurs demonstrated the inadequacy of the laws dealing with persons aiding such enemies. He added that he had directed the preparation of legislation to close these loopholes and aiming at severe penalties for conspiracy to commit sabotage, also for harbouring or assisting saboteurs.
Mr Biddle, it is assumed, was referring to the prosecution of 14 persons accused of aiding eight Nazi saboteurs.
