NEW ZEALANDERS AT SINGAPORE

(Rec. 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 7. Stokers (First Class) R. A. McNeill (Woodville), H. C. McCardle (Raglan), E. R. E. Pringle (Mercer), K. A. Geary (Christchurch) and R. W. Britmeyer (New Brighton) and Signallers J. McKenzie and J. Harper (Wellington) served in the same ship as Lieutenant W. Scott-Wilson, of Auckland, who was at Singapore. The five named volunteered to attempt to flood the Empress of Asia’s magazines when she was burning in Singapore harbour. They tried unsuccessfully and had just left the ship when she blew up.
