RED CROSS SOCIETY A report that there was on hand 209 balaclavas, 168 pairs of mittens, 72 paids of bed socks, 80 scarves, 79 pairs of socks, 19 cholera belts, 19 body belts, 16 quilts, 11 pullovers, four pairs of knee caps and three pairs of gloves was received from the wool committee at a meeting of the Gore Red Cross Society. The report stated that the committee was most grateful to the Glenaray knitting circle, Waikaia, Riversdale, Waikaka, Balfour, Otama, Wendon, Knapdale, Kaiwera, Waikaka Valley, Mataura, Otautau, Mataura Island, Wyndham, Seaward Downs, and Winton Red Cross Societies, the Waikaka Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Gore Women’s Club welfare circle, the Gore Women’s Institute, the Gore Catholic Women’s Guild, H. and J. Smith’s business girls guild, McNab Women’s Institute; Mesdames W. Reynolds, J. A. S. Aitken, G. Peterson, Wilkie, Wilson, Stark, Whittle, Wallis, Gordon, Dillon, Dickie, Herron, Irving, Edwards, Johnston, Maclean, Corcoran, Mee, Gore High School girls, and Misses Clelland, Brophy, White, Mac Gibbon, Richards and Paterson for knitting. Mrs R. B. Bannerman presided over the following members: Mesdames Andersen, C. G. Burgess, A. F. Cochrane, E. T, Eastwood, F. Ham, T. L. Macdonald, J. C. McDonald, J. McKinnell, E. H. W. Rowntree, Misses Aitken and Paterson and Mr Soper. The canteen committee reported that five cases of marmalade and honey, and 54 magazines had been forwarded to Christchurch for soldiers in hospital. There was on hand approximately 1071 b of jam and honey and 88 magazines. The committee thanked all donors of jam and honey and Mr W. D. Shelton for packing and Mrs J. O. Ward for painting bottles. A report submitted by the produce committee stated that 125 dozen eggs and one box of cake had been forwarded to Christchurch for soldiers in hospital. The committee had to thank the Balfour, Waikaia, Waikaka, Riversdale, Glenaray, Waikaka Valley, and Knapdale Red Cross Societies for cakes and eggs, and Messrs A. C. Steel and P. R. Stewart for packing. The report of the nursing committee stated that classes were being held for first aid and home nursing. Eighteen candidates had passed their first year home nursing, and 29 the sanitation and hygiene examination. LAWN TENNIS There was a big attendance of members and supporters and players from other clubs at the official opening of the St. Andrew’s Tennis Club on Saturday afternoon. The weather conditions were ideal and a handicap tournament was conducted during the afternoon.

The president of the club (Mr L. O. Wallis) welcomed all present and said that the big attendance was gratifying. He was pleased to see so many visitors present. He was sorry that the patron of the club, the Rev. F. B. Barton, was not able to be present. He had also received a telegram from Mrs T. L. Macdonald, expressing regret that she could not attend. Mr Wallis then declared the courts open for play and asked Mr Johnston Wylie to hit the first ball over the net.

An announcement that an anonymous donor had given two crystal sugar basins, two jugs, one dozen teaspoons, three plates, one tea-pot, two cups and saucers and a cupboard to put them in was made by Mr Wallis, who expressed the thanks of the club for this generous gift. The handicap mixed doubles tournament held during the afternoon was won by Mrs E. Scott and F. J. Townsend.

DISTRICT ACTIVITIES A report submitted by the secretary of the Eastern Southland Patriotic Committee (Mr R. S. Green) states that the Charlton committee has reported that the electric iron given by the Southland Electric Power Supply was utilized as a prize for a competition which was won by Mr J. Leitch, of Mataura. The competition brought £4/17/6.

McNab, Brydone and Riversdale have held successful community sings recently, the report states, while the McNab women also held a sale of produce in Gore. The McNab efforts netted £6O/6/-, while expenses totalled £2/7/6. Riversdale reports a profit of more than £l5O.

The raffle being conducted by the Waimumu Committee with a gold and amethyst necklace as prize, would be drawn on October 4. The appeal for donations to the London Relief Fund was meeting with a good response. The people of London, men, women and children, rich and poor, were playing a bigger part in the war than civilians have ever been called upon to play before, and their homes and businesses were being attacked daily. This appeal was directed to all those who admire the wonderful way in which Londoners are facing their trials—and who could

fail to admire it, states the report. “We do get such a kick out of anything coming from New Zealand,” writes a New Zealand soldier in England in expressing appreciation of parcels received. Here was proof that already the patriotic funds were getting results, the report concludes.
