EASY WIN FOR GREEN GABLES

Brilliant Effort By Spearthrust

1 CUP FAVOURITE WELL BEATEN (Special to The Times) OAMARU, September 28. Green Gables and Johnemby accounted for the bulk of the speculation on the Trial Stakes and they finished first and second. Green Gables was the smartest away and -was well clear entering the straight from Portadown, Johnemby, Silver Don, and Vaunt. Johnemby ran into second place as soon as the run home was entered upon but had no chance of getting near Green Gables who won in an effortless manner. Poetic was not well placed over the early stages but finished fast into third place a head in front of Pink Gauntlet with My Song, Vaunt and Rora Hiko together next. CLOSE FINISH IN HIGHWEIGHT The Highweight Handicap provided an interesting race and a close finish, five horses crossing the line in a bunch. Master Dingle, Sir Hugh and Dranoel were the slowest away and the lead was taken by Twenty Grand who had a substantial advantage turning for home from Sir Hugh and Chirp with Dranoel and Flame Queen becoming prominent. Twenty Grand stopped badly a furlong from the post and Dranoel drew to the front from Sir Hugh, Chirp and Flame Queen. Dranoel was subjected to a determined challenge and was all out to hold off Sir Hugh and Chirp with Flame Queen a neck away in front of Master Dingle. PASSING BY’S SUCCESS Passing By justified his win favouritism in the Waitaki Trot by a decisive win. Ben Travis soon went to the front and led through the back stretch from Passing By, Black Label and Diviner. Ben Travis was overhauled by Passing By before reaching the straight and the latter carried on to win easing up. Lady Denise was a good third three lengths in front of her bracketed mate, Black Label. PETERSHAM FAILS Petersham carried twice as many tickets as the second choice, The Raker, in the Kurow Cup, but after closely following the pacemakers, Straightdell and Cymric, to the straight entrance he failed to run on as anticipated and was well beaten into third place. Cymric soon ran to the front from the start and was joined by Straightdell, and the latter led into the straight from Cymric with Petersham and The Raker closing up. Petersham tackled Straightdell early in the run home but could not make much impression. The Raker then put in a determined claim. He soon drew to the front and appeared to be in for an easy win but Straightdell executed a renewed effort nearing the post and had The Raker fully extended. Petersham was a good third half a length in front of Araboa. Cymric was tailed off. A WARM FAVOURITE Spearthrust was sent out a shortpriced favourite for the Hydro Hack Handicap and was responsible for an attractive performance to gain a narrow win. Midgard was the early leader and entered the straight from Prince Ruenalf, Blazealong and Spearthrust. Prince Ruenalf ran to the front a furlong from home but a few chains from the post his rider was thrown through his saddle slipping and in the scrambling finish which ensued Spearthrust got up to beat Midgard by a narrow margin. Blazealong v/as right up with this pair half a length in front of Twenty Grand. Prince Ruenalf was going like a winner when the mishap occurred. Spearthrust had to jump over the fallen rider, M. Billington, who had a remarkable escape from any injury. Spearthrust was checked for a stride and Midgard came at him again otherwise his win would have been more decisive. VETERAN SPRINTER SUCCEEDS The veteran Silver Streak caused the day’s sensation by winning the T. A. Munro Handicap in his best style. Toro Koura led Silver Streak from the start to the straight entrance but the latter then drew to the front and without being called upon had two lengths to spare at the post from Straightdell with Night Pal close up three lengths in front of Toro Koura. Boswell lost ground at the start and was well in the rear throughout. SABU PENALIZED Sabu led throughout the Hakataramea Trot, and after boring badly underpressure to the outside of the track and hampering Irish Dusk he won comfortably from Irish Dusk. Mirage finished well into third place, beating Manawai by a neck. Manawai, who was a staunch favourite, was carried out when making a forward move during the middle stages and had to cover a lot of extra ground. At an inquiry after the race Irish Dusk was placed first and Sabu second. ANOTHER FAVOURITE WINS Investors completed a profitable day by sending out Airline and Craiglea favourites for the Gillies’ Hack Handicap as this pair led the field home. Asia and Miltiades were the leaders from Craiglea and Airline to the home turn where Craiglea went to the front to lead into the straight from Airline who soon drew past Craiglea and went on for a decisive win. In a close finish for third money Tissue got up to beat Miltiades by a head. Prince Flaneur and Lord Midas were next. Airline’s success was full of merit as his rider lost an iron at the start and rode throughout the race with both legs out of the stirrups.
