PROTEST AGAINST SUNDAY WORK

DREDGE WORKERS ON WEST COAST

(United Press Association)

GREYMOUTH, September 29

There was a general stoppage of work today on West Coast dredges following the decision of the Dredgeworkers’ Union at yesterday’s annual meeting to take a stand against Sunday work. This union works a 48-hour ordinary week and Sunday work in addition, making altogether 52 to 58 hours. Whereas the pay for Sunday is time and-half till midday and double time thereafter the union points out that Saturday work in other industries is paid at extra rates and considers that Sunday rates in the dredging industry should be better.
