GERMAN CAPTAIN’S MISTAKE

(Received September 29, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 28.

The Sunday Express says it is possible to reveal that Captain Eberhard Spiller, assistant German air attache in • London before the outbreak of the war, who was killed in an air battle over Britain, unwittingly allowed details of one of Germany’s secret weapons to fall into British hands.

When war was imminent Spiller, who was actually a spy, fled the country. The police searched his house in Hampstead, and found details of a secret weapon, the papers having fallen behind a chest. Spiller was among members of the embassy staff who did not pay their debts before leaving Britain. The victims included many West End tradesmen, hotels and restaurants. He also persuaded a neutral embassy attache to cash a valueless cheque the day before his departure.
