WOMAN KILLED IN MOTOR ACCIDENT
(United Press Association) HASTINGS, September 29. An elderly woman passenger was killed and the driver injured when a car left the road near Mohaka bridge on the Napier-Taupo highway on Saturday and plunged 30 feet down a bank. The victims were: Winifred Dorothy Sargeant, of Napier, aged 60, killed. William Moore Barton, of Devonport, aged 50, injured. MAORI RUN OVER BY TRAIN (United Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, September 29. A Maori, George Tongariro, aged 45, a married man, was killed by a train one mile and a-half south of Koputaroa on Saturday night. It is thought that Tongariro, who was on his way home from the races at Foxton sat down on the rails and fell asleep. INJURY TO MAN’S ANKLE Colin Martin, aged 21, of Antrim street, North Invercargill, suffered an injury to his ankle when the motorcycle he was riding came into collision with a motor-car driven by Mr Anthony Bone at the corner of Crinan and Conon street on Saturday afternoon. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital. His condition is satisfactory. BOY’S LEG BROKEN IN FALL FROM TREE Mervyn Kearney, aged 9, of 32 Scott street, Invercargill, fell from a tree when birdnesting yesterday and broke his leg. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital. His condition is satisfactory.
