LIST OF URGENT WORKS

SCHOOL BUILDINGS IN SOUTHLAND

At a meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday it was decided to send a list of urgent works to the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R: Mason. The board’s architect, Mr J. J. Gough, stated that in the Southland Education Board’s district ■ there were a number of very small residences, occupied by married teachers with a family, which were altogether inadequate in size and which lacked modern conveniences. The works which called for particular attention were as rebuilding residence and acquisition of residence site; Tweed street (Intermediate), new school; Mossburn, additions to residence; Pine Bush, removal of residence and additions; Scotts Gap, additions to residence; Niagara, addition to’school and remodelling; _ Gorge Road, rebuilding residence; Lochiel, re-

building residence; Glenham, new residence; Arrowtown, rebuilding residence; Waimatuku, rebuilding residence; Waikaka Valley, rebuilding residence; Pukerau, rebuilding school; Waikaia, rebuilding school. The Niagara and Waikaia jobs were two very urgent cases.

The Niagara school building was erected 46 years ago,, said the architect. Its orientation was wrong and very little sunlight from the north or east entered the classroom. The ventilation was inadequate and taking all the circumstanes into consideration and the fact that the school was likely to maintain its present status and the employment of two teachers for some time to

come, the architect was of the opinion that the building should be remodelled and added to.

The present residence at Waikaia was of four rooms and the buildings were 57 years old. They were borer infested in most parts and the residence was damp internally. This was due to the fact that the building was erected on the lower part of a sloping section and was so close to the ground that satisfactory ventilation underneath was impossible.
