LONDONERS ARE INDIGNANT
Senseless Bombing By
Nazis (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, September 26. German raids on London yesterday cost the Nazis 31 planes, 15 of them bombers. Britain lost eight fighters, but the pilots of three are safe. The nineteenth successive air raid “alert” sounded in London on Wednesday and Londoners resigned themselves to the orchestra of the heavy British anti-aircraft barrage, punctuated by the crash of humble homes hit by bombs dropped indiscriminately from German aeroplanes. This bombing' seemed even more senseless and criminal than that of Tuesday night, when several more hospitals were hit. The citizens of the metropolis who are proverbially kindly natured and little prone to anger are now growing indignant at the lack of any pretence of decency on the part of the Germans in the hideous campaign against the civilian populations.
The Germans do not realize, according to neutral observers, that instead of producing horror among the Londoners they are making them extremely angry. “And when the Londoners are really angry,” said a neutral observer, “they are a tougher proposition than the Germans can deal with.”
BARRAGE IN SUBURBS While Central London was relatively quieter last night, outlying suburbs experienced their heaviest anti-aircraft barrage so far. The crash of the firing guns shook buildings 12 miles out Churches were again hit by bombs. One hundred and forty people were taking refuge in the crypt of one southeast church when the walls crumbled down. The people came to the surface unhurt.
