Gradually Improving

(Special ‘to The Times)

WELLINGTON, September 27. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Moderate southerly winds; weather cool and showery, but gradually improving. Seas mod-

erate. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather fair and mild in the eastern districts and in the North Island, unsettled on the West Coast of the South Island with some further rain and showers later extending up the West Coast as far as Taranaki and up the east coast as far as Canterbury. Temperatures becoming cooler in the south. General Situation.—An anti-cyclone is still located in the north, while a depression is moving on to southern New Zealand from the Tasman Sea. Pressure is rising over Tasmania. Winds.—Light to fresh north-west-erly to westerly predominating, but a change to moderate southerlies setting in in the far south tonight and probably extending over the southern half of the South Island during tomorrow. Seas (N.Z. waters.)—Mainly slight or moderate, but rising somewhat in the Taranaki Bight and about Cook and Foveaux Straits, Eastern Tasman Sea: Light and variable winds and slight seas in the north; moderate northerlies elsewhere, soon changing to southerly in the south with moderate seas.

The weather in Invercargill yesterday was unsettled. Light and heavy rain alternately fell during the day. Although the day was dull, the temperature was not cold. The weather at 1 o’clock this morning was cold and calm, with light rain falling. The barometer readings for the last three mornings have been as follows :—
