RIDERS ENGAGED FOR KUROW
Walter Moore Fails
To Stay
SILVER STREAK TO RACE AGAIN Nominations for the Gore Racing Club’s meeting close on October 7. Better Suited Green Gables has not been staying on in his races, but over five furlongs tomorrow he should be well suited. To Reappear Fidelis, who is to reappear at Wingatui, looked like winning good middle distance races last season. Stud Item The first foaling at Stonyhurst Stud is a colt, by Bulandshar from Wild Hind, dam of Wild Chase. First Foal That fine trotting mare, Helen’s Bay, has produced a good-looking foal by Lusty Volo. Retired Courtyard has been returned to his owner and he is unlikely to race again. Omitted Midgard 9.0 was inadvertently omitted from the list of acceptors for the Hydro Hack Handicap at the Kurow meeting at Oamaru. Solid Work Heidelberg continues to get through solid work at headquarters and great interest will be shown in his form at early meetings.
Anglo French Anglo French, who is a regular vzorker at Invercargill, is a good type of four-year-old by Sir Simper from Lorette, the dam of Colonel French. To Race Later A good opinion is held of the Blather-skite-Charmaine two-year-old, but he is unlikely to be raced until the Christmas meetings. Well Related
All Gallant, who showed a good turn of speed at Hutt Park on Saturday, is a half-brother by Gallant Knight to Taxpayer, a New Zealand Derby winner. A Trial
Both Tissue and Wild Coon will be tried over a mile—the Guineas distance —in the Mangatua Handicap the first day at Wingatui. Good Progress Chirp has not been long back in E. J. Ellis’s care, but she has made good progress and shaped well at a matinee meeting at Washdyke during the week. Toro Koura Toro Koura was operated on for a wind infliction a short time back and although placed at Geraldine there may be a doubt about his returning to his best.
Useful Pacer Lady Denise has been costly in recent starts but judging by the way she has been nominated at Kurow she is expected to be an early winner. She has more speed than most novices.
The Favourites Swordstick and Petersham are almost certain to dispute favouritism for the Kurow Cup. They finished first and second the second day at Geraldine and Swordstick now comes in on 41b better terms. Full Relations
It is unusual to find three full relations engaged at one meeting, but Mr D. M. Tweedie has Dark Flight, Gold Flight and Gay Flight entered at Dunedin. Both Dark Flight and Gold Flight are to race over a mile the second day. Named
The Nigger . Minstrel-Morse Signal three-year-old gelding tin R. E. McLellan’s team has been named Navua. The three-year-old gelding by Paper Money from Smiling Eyes in J. A. Rowland’s team will race under the name of Crinkle.
Royal Chief Royal Chief continues to gallop pleasingly, and in the opinion of his trainer is more forward at this time of the year than he was in Sydney last spring. Present intentions are to give him one race at Wingatui, and this should help him for his trip to Trentham. L. J. Ellis will ride him throughout the season.
Riding Engagements The following riding engagements have been made for the Kurow meeting:—L. J. Ellis: Toro Koura, Craiglea, Foxette; R. J. Mackie: Verlagia, Dranoel, Cymric, Haughty Winner; P. Spratt: Green Gables, Captain Bruce, Silver Streak, Lord Midas; H. W. Hibberd: Flame Queen; M. Billington: Gold Nugget, Prince Ruenalf; E. Baker: Portadown; L. Hare: The Vulture; J. W. Jennings: Rora Hiko; J. Wadley, Entail; M. Caddy: Pink Gauntlet. Not A Stayer
The more racing done by Walter Moore, winner of the sensational second heat of the Timaru Nursery Stakes, the more it becomes apparent that he cannot slay, comments The Timaru Herald. Nothing can take away from him the credit of stepping 2min 10 4-ssec at Washdyke, but there has been ample confirmation of the suggestion that Special Force was unlucky in that race.
Another Come-Back
Silver Streak has made several farewell bows to the racecourse, and after his last appearance in the Waikouaiti Cup last New Year’s Day his owner stated that he would definitely retire this game little Paper Money gelding. Silver Streak was taken home and used as a hack. Now rising 11 years old, he cannot be expected to retain his brilliance.
Battle Song The Irish-bred stallion Battle Song, winner of the Irish St Leger, has arrived in Auckland and is being sent on to his new owner, Mr G. A. Kain, Gladstone Park, Orari. Battle Song is seven years old by English time, and he won races both in England and in Ireland. In addition to the St. Leger at The Curragh, he won two other good events as a three-year-old, and he was also second in the Irish Two Thousand and Derby the latter race being won by Raeburn, and third in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal, won by Black Domino. Battle Song is a brown horse
by Spion Kop, grandson of Carbine, from Cradle Song, by Hurry On. He is accompanied by two fillies.
Sandydale Among the mares booked to the imported stallion Sandydale is Lady Chenault, the dam of Helen Scott. Lady Chenault was got by Peter Chenault— Nyallo, by Great Audubon from Millis C., the dam of Acron. Nyallo is also the dam of Taxpayer. Rocks Ahead and other well-known mares are also booked to Sandydale, who aparently is making a strong appeal to owners of brood mares. At Addington
Two Auckland pacers, Nawton Parrish and Kewpie’s Jewel, went on to Christchurch after racing at Hutt Park on Saturday. Nawton Parrish, who has been in L. Mahoney’s stable since the August meeting at Epsom, did not race up to expectations in the Wellington Handicap, fading out after being prominent for about seven furlongs. He was taken over after the race by D. Bennett. When Kewpie’s Jewel finished second in the Railway Handicap it was her last race for Mr J. R. Henderson, she having been purchased by the Hon. P. C. Webb, to take delivery after the race. Kewpie’s Jewel, who ran a splendid race, was turned out in good condition by R. Dunn, and was well handled by A. W. Broughton. She registered 3min 20 l-ssec from 3min 34sec, although she had no chance with the winner. Gold Bar,
