AMERICAN LABOUR LEADER
“VICTORY VITAL FOR U.S. SECURITY”
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 26, 9.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, September 25. Mr William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, addressing the American Legion convention, said: “The American people feel that Britain’s victory is vital for United States security. Consequently, it would seem logical for Americans to extend to Britain and her heroic army and navy all support possible short of war.” The President (Mr Franklin D. Roosevelt) has called up 36,700 additional National Guardsmen, including Hawaiian and Puerto Rican units for a year’s training, beginning on October 15. The United States War Department has awarded contracts totalling £42,936,500 to four concerns for aircraft and aero engines. This will include such splendid machines as the Lockheed interceptor, one of the newest American planes which recently was made available to Britain.
