NATIONAL FITNESS RALLY

TOMORROW’S PROGRAMME

The following is the programme for the National Fitness Rally which is to be held at Rugby Park otmorrow:— 1.30 p.m.: Primary schools’ tabloid sports; 2 p.m., parade units assembled at railway side of" ground; 2.15 p.m., New Zealand Anthem, massed brass bands, conducted by Mr A. R. Wills; march past, accompanied by massed bands, conductor, Lieutenant A. McMaster; opening speech by the DeputyMayor; salute to flag; National Anthem, two verses, massed bands, conductor, Lieutenant A. McMaster; release of pigeons; dismissal and march off of teams, massed bands (Mr A. R. Wills); 3 p.m., tabloid sports, bushcraft events, boxing, dancing, tennis and. badminton display, croquet tournament; 3.30 p.m., massed bands display; marching demonstration, Caledonian Pipe Band (Drum-Major C. Henderson); trumpet fanfare march, Boys’ High School Drum, Trumpet and Bugle Band (Lieutenant J. L. Napier), quickstep display, Band of the Ist Battalion, Southland Regiment. 3.30-3.45 p.m., all other programmes suspended for band display; 3.45 p.m., tabloid sports programmes resume; 4 p.m., cycling display, wrestling (or consecutive to boxing); 4.45 p.m., approximate conclusion of programme.

The band marshals will be DrumMajor A. L. Parry and Lieutenant J. L. Napier.

A bushcraft relay championship, covering the four principal aspects of bushcraft, will be one of the highlights of the pageant. The events have been arranged by the Invercargill Caledonian Society, members of which were engaged last Saturday in hewing the logs’from Seaward Bush. The relay, which is believed to be the first of its kind to be staged in the history of bushcraft, will comprise teams each of five competitors. One axeman from each team will cut through a 12-inch standing block, another will engage in a 12-inch underhand chop, two double-hand sawyers will cut through a 15-inch log, and the fifth member of each team will cut through the same log with a singlehanded saw.

The following teams have been selected by Mr A. E. Cocker for the relay championship.

No. 1 Team.—Thomas Latchford (underhand chop); F. Waldron and T. Mclntosh (double-hand sawing); C. Neame (standing chop); R. J. Fraser (captain, single-hand sawing). No. 2 Team.—C. Bone; J. Garvie and C: Sinclair; J. Swale; R. Hogg (captain).

No. 3 Team.—W. Murdoch; W. Hodge and L. Robertson; John Pont; Geoff. Blanks (captain). '
