KEW ROAD TO BE RECONSTRUCTED

LOCAL BODIES REACH DECISION

Subject to confirmation by the councils concerned, representatives of the Invercargill City Council, the South Invercargill Borough Council and the Southland County Council decided at a meeting yesterday afternoon to put in hand the work of reconstructing and sealing Kew road, the main approach to the Southland Hospital. The cost of the work is estimated at £B5O.

Recently the South Invercargill Borough Council wrote to the City Council stating that the question of reconstructing and sealing Kew road had been under consideration by the Borough Council for some time, but that the Borough Council had neither the staff nor the money available for such a large project. Accordingly, it was suggested that representatives of the local bodies directly concerned should meet to discuss the matter.

Yesterday’s meeting, which was the outcome of this suggestion, was attended by the Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. R. Martin), Cr A. Scott (chairman of the Works Committee), Cr F. A. Webb, Mr W. F. Sturman (town clerk), and Mr F. M. Corkill (city engineer), representing the Invercargill City Council; the Mayor (Mr Owen Smith), Cr D. Harris and Mr L. G. Kelly (town, clerk), representing the South Invercargill Borough Council; and Mr W. M. Norman (chairman) and Mr H. C. Gimblett (county clerk), representing the Southland County Council. The meeting decided that, subject to confirmation by the councils concerned, the City Council and the County Council should each pay sevenseventeenths of the cost of the work, and that the Borough Council should pay three-seventeenths. It was stated that probably less than half of the total cost would have to be found during the current financial year. The carrying out of the work was left in the hands of the city and county engineers, with instructions to call for tenders for the reconstruction work. It was agreed that these tenders should be considered by the three local bodies. It was decided that the maintenance of the completed road should be the responsibility of the Borough Council, and that the Borough Council should also maintain the road in the period between reconstruction and sealing. It was stated that the Borough Council intended to apply to have that portion of Elies road within its boundaries and a part of Stirrat street declared main highways.
