BEEF MARKET EASIER

Keen Demand For Prime Wethers YESTERDAY’S VALUES FIRM Mutton values showed a further rise of from 4/- to 6/- a head for prime wethers at the Lorneville stock sale yesterday. Some excellent quality lots were offered and prices reached as high as 60*/-, the highest for some years. Numerically the yarding in all sections was much the same as the previous week. Beef values, however, showed an easing tendency; good quality offerings showed a decline of about £1 a head, while unfinished lots dropped about £1 to £2 a head. .

A comparison of the totals yarded in the various sections with the previous week’s sale was as follows:—

FAT CATTLE The yarding in the fat cattle section showed a slight increase on the number forward the previous week. There was no outside competition and as a consequence prices were easier by about £1 a head for good quality while unfinished lots were back from £1 to . £2 a head. Prime heavy weight bullocks made up to £23/15/-, heavyweight bullocks from £lB to £2l, prime handy weights from £l4 to £l7 with light and unfinished from ■ £lO/10/- to £l2. Prime heavy heifers made up to £l6/7/6, . prime quality ! from £l4 to £l5/10/- with lighter 1 from £lO to £l2. STORE CATTLE There was a very small yarding in the store cattle section, the bulk of the entry being made up of empty cows. The best of these made up to £B, clean young sorts £5/10/- to £6/10/-, with culls down to £3/10/-. A small pen of three-year-old steers brought £lO. The entry of dairy cows was only a small one. Good sorts sold at late rates, but light conditioned and culls were hard to quit. The best dairy cows made from £lO to £ll/10/-, medium sorts from £7/10/- to £9, culls down to £3/10/-.

FAT SHEEP Several trucks of outstanding wethers were a feature of the fat sheep yarding, which was almost the same numerically as the . previous week. The market was again a buoyant one, values showing an increase of from 4/- to 6/a head. An outstanding pen of four prime heavy wethers made 60/-, while others, brought from 50/- to 56/-.

Prime mediumweight wethers brought from 38/- to 43/-, and lighter from 32/- to 35/-, prime heavy ewes realized from 40/- to 42/—, prime mediumweight 35/- to 37/-, lighter from 28/- to 30/-, and unfinished from 24/- to 26/-. STORE SHEEP The store sheep entry was larger than the previous week. The market remained firm at late rates. Good ewe hoggets made from 33/- to 36/_ and wether hoggets were slightly easier, the best of these making 22/-, while others brought from 15/6 to 19/-. A line of 2,4, 6 and 8-tooth breeding ewes made 33/-. Ewes and lambs made from 12/- to 14/- all counted. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., sold:—Client (Riversdale), 377 ewes at 33/7. YARDING OF FAT STOCK SOUND INQUIRY AT GORE SALE A yarding of fat sheep and fat cattle met with a sound inquiry at the fortnightly Gore stock sale yesterday and values secured were on a par with those ruling at recent sales. Several pens of wethers of outstanding quality were included in the fat sheep section. These were offered by Dalgety and Co. Ltd. on account of Mr Donald Gillespie (Merino Downs) and brought up to 48/-. Other lines brought from 46/- to 47/- for prime sorts, while medium wethers sold at 36/6 to'4l/-. In the cattle section up to £l9/10/was paid for extra prime bullocks, other sorts selling at £l7/10/-. Medium weights realized from £ll to £l2 2/6 and prime heifers brought from £l3/12/6 to £14.. Fat cows sold at from £9 to £ll/7/6, poorer sorts realizing £5/5/- There was only a small store entry. Dairy cows brought up to £6, dairy heifers up to £4/15/-. Dalgety and Co. A successful clearing sale was conducted by the National Mortgage and Agency Co. Ltd, at South Hillend on account of Mr H. Smith.
