Regent To Have New Zealand Premiere Of “Virginia City”

The first New Zealand release of any picture is regarded as a privilege in the theatre world. In the case of “Virginia City,” which will have its Dominion premiere at the Regent Theatre on Saturday, the privilege is also an event of considerable local interest. _ The people of Invercargill will have ’ the first opportunity of seeing a film which Warner Bros, claim to be one of their big productions of the year. Films seem to travel in cycles that have a temporary success, but none of them has the steady drawing power of the Western thriller. They were popular when the industry first started, and they have maintained their place through all the changing phases of the silent and talking screen. Productions like “Captain Blood,” “The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “Dodge City,” are perfect examples of the “thrill” pictures which attract audiences of every generation. “Virginia City” is packed with even more action and excitement than “Dodge City.” It co-stars Errol

Flynn as a tough, two-fisted adventurer, and Miriam Hopkins in a new role as a singing, dancing spitfire. “Virginia City” is an exciting story of gold-smuggling during the final stages of the Civil War. Errol Flynn, a Union Intelligence officer, escapes from a Confederate prison and learns of a conspiracy to smuggle five million dollars worth of gold out of Virginia City to aid the South, but he does not realize that Miriam Hopkins, with whom he is deeply in love, is one of the conspirators. The situation becomes even more exciting when Humphrey Bogart, as a notorious bandit, attacks the Union Garrison outside Virginia City, and the gold caravan starts its mad dash during the raid.

Humphrey Bogart, Frank McHugh, Alan Hale and Guinn “Big Boy” Williams all give excellent performances in the supporting roles. The original screen story was directed by that popular director of many impressive films— Michael Curtiz.
