KING ANNOUNCES NEW AWARD

George Cross To Be Given To Civilians STANDARD TO BE KEPT HIGH (Received September 24, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, September 23. The new decoration, the George Cross, announced by the King in his speech, is intended to be awarded for deeds of valour by civilian men and'women in all walks of life. Like the Victoria Cross, but after which it ranks, posthumous grants may be made, and the cross will be worn before all orders and other decorations. It wjll take the place of the Empire Gallantry medals, present holders of which will receive the cross in substitution. The George Medal will be granted more freely for civilian deeds of bravery, although it is intended that the standard should be high. Admiral of the Fleet Lord Chatfield, chairman of the committee on gallantry awards for civil defence, is charged with ensuring that immediate reports be made by the authorities and organizations concerned. There will be a small military, division of the cross to enable special awards to be made to members of the services.
