“NOT IN ACCORD WITH APPEALS”
Minister’s Statement About Credits
UNITED KINGDOM TRADE WITH N.Z.
(United Press Association)
AUCKLAND, September 23.
“The Minister’s statement does not accord with the constant appeals from Britain for increase I orders by importers throughout New Zealand,” said Mr Gainor Jackson, president of the Bureau of Importers today when criticizing the statement by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) that Britain did not want credits in Nev Zealand, but wanted them in countries where those credits would do more good._ Mr Jackson sai Great Britain was endeavouring by evei~’ means in her power to increase her exports, so that the war effort could be sustained by the economic arm.
.“In the fight of trade balances ( in recent years,” Mr Jackson said, “Mr Nash’s policy of import restrictions would appear to be anything but helpful to the United Kingdom.” He said that for the seven months of this year to July the exports to Great Britain were £43,994,256 and the imports £14,234.326 showing an excess of exports of £29,759,930. This large and increasing disparity in trade spoke for itself.
