EXCELLENT PROGRESS REPORTED Excellent progress in all departments was shown at the monthly meeting of the Invercargill Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors. Mr E. H. Smith was welcomed to the directorate by the president, Mr F. Lange. The general secretary’s report revealed that the club had met regularly with good attendances. A new feature this month was the formation of an Optimists’ Club among the senior men and business men. This group met once a month in the Tudor Lounge for tea, sing song and an address by a visiting speaker on some topic of general interest such as travel or international affairs. The purpose of the club was to promote a spirit of optimism and goodwill among the members of the club and in the community. Supplementary to the teas were the service tasks through which medium service was given to the Y.M.C.A. Membership of the club was not confined to gymnastic members, although membership in the Y.M.C.A. was essential. The club’s membership was 35.
“The school holidays provided our first opportunity for an educational and recreative programme,” says the report. “The boys’ work committee met and arranged a tour of factories and business houses in the city in order to bring various phases of industry to the notice of the boys. Premises visited included: The railway workshops, the News office, the Post and Telegraph office, Fleming’s flour mill and the gasworks. In addition ' these visits Mr B. Lange showed some of the films taken by the Y.M.C.A. president. The boys brought their lunches’ each day and tea was supplied in the building. The last day of the tour was to be spent at Oreti Beach for games and a camp fire, but inclement weather prevented this outing. We have received several letters of appreciation from parents about this part of the work and it is hoped that in future more comprehensive programmes will be possible.” Air Force, and, while Luftwaffe chiefs are thinking out a third set of daylight mass tactics, a night bombing seems to
