GERMANS RAID LONDON IN BIG FORMATIONS
THREE PLANES SHOT DOWN BEFORE REACHING CAPITAL (United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 23, 11.40 p.m.) LONDON, September 23. German raiders last night used three routes to get to London. They came through Essex, Kent and from the south-west in large formations. Three of the raiding planes were shot down before they could get to London. London’s ground defences were in full operation and there was much searchlight activity. There were dogfights to the east, but these were not visible. The German planes came in the early hours of darkness. A block of flats was hit in London but no one was hurt, as nearly everyone was having tea in the shelters at the time. An incendiary bomb fell on a hospital in East London, but the fire was quickly put out.
Bombing attacks in other parts of England last night were widely spread. The raiders came in relays of single craft. A town in the south-east was raided, but very little damage was done.
