PARCELS FOR TROOPS IN BRITAIN

DUTY NOT PAYABLE ON TOBACCO

Shortly after the Ist Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary , Force reached Egypt advice was given to friends and relations in New Zealand that they should not send tobacco to the troops because duty was payable on such parcels. An inquiry was received by The Southland Times whether a similar position existed in the United Kingdom where the 2nd Echelon is stationed.

The inquiry was referred to the Customs Office at Invercargill and it was explained that parcels sent to New Zealand troops in England were admitted free of duty if correctly addressed. It was stated that any parcels sent to New Zealand troops serving with the forces in the United Kingdom were admitted free of duty if addressed care of the New Zealand Base Post Office. In the case of New Zealanders serving with British units, parcels, if they were to be admitted without the payment of duty, should be addressed to the New Zealand War Services Association, 415 The Strand, London.
