TWENTY ACRES OF TURNIPS

SOUTHLAND RACECOURSE TO BE CROPPED

A decision to sow in turnips about 20 acres of the racecourse, enclosure has been made by the Southland Racing Club., In this way the club will cooperate in the national effort for production on an increased scale. The total area of the enclosure is about 30 acres. The remainder of the land will be used as a run-off for sheep, which will feed on the turnips next winter. It is probable that next season the area will be cropped again, but not necessarily in turnips. Most of the ploughing of the enclosure was done last autumn by the caretaker (Mr T. Marshall) and his staff. Consideration was given by the club to the possible cultivation of the land surrounding the course, but as almost all of the best of the soil was used when building up the tracks the prospect was not capitalized.
