Mainly Fair To Fine

WELLINGTON, September 23.

Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington:— Moderate to fresh south-westerly to westerly winds with a few isolated showers but the weather mainly fair to fine and cool. Seas moderate to

rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather unsettled in central provinces with rain at times but fair to fine in the northern and southern extremities of the Dominion. Temperatures mild in the north but cold in the south with frosts inland tonight. General Situation.—Pressure remains high to the north-east of New Zealand and is rising again rapidly in the south behind a depression which lies across the South Island. A low pressure centre is located in the western Tasman Sea.

Winds.—North-westerly at first from Nelson and Marlborough northwards, but a change to south-westerly or southerly advancing to beyond Cook Strait tonight. Force moderate in the far north, elsewhere fresh to strong and reaching gale force in exposed positions about Cook Strait and'the Wellington province, but gradually decreasing tomorrow.

Seas (New Zealand waters). —Rough about Cook Strait, rather rough in the south Taranaki Bight and south of Castle Point; slight or moderate elsewhere. Moderate to fresh north-wester-ly winds in the northern portion and south-westerlies or southerlies in the southern portion. Seas moderate.

Windy weather was experienced in Invercargill yesterday. A little rain fell during the morning, but the afternoon was fine. There was a fairly strong wind from the west during the day. At 1 o’clock this morning the weather was cool and clear with a light breeze coming from the west.
