WOMEN’S DIVISION

DIPTON.— Mrs J. S. McDonald presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Dipton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Members handed in donations for the Makogai Lepers’ Christmas Fund. It was decided to have a parcel of disabled soldiers’ goods for sale at the next meeting. Dressmaking classes are to be begun, two classes having been formed. It was decided to celebrate the birthday of the branch by a social and dance. Mrs McRae gave a report on the recent executive meeting held in Invercargill. Mrs A. Lindsay gave a demonstration on Vandyke braid work. The roll call was, “My most awkward moment.” Competitions resulted: Best bloom, Mrs F. S. Sinclair 1, Mrs P. Giles 2, Mrs R. Gerrard 3. Shortbread, Mrs D. R. Evans 1, Miss I. Craig 2, Mrs R. Gerrard 3. Tea cosy, Mrs D. R. Evans 1, Mrs R. Gerrard 2, Mrs F. S. Sinclair 3. Members of the Farmers’ Union and the Young Farmers’ Club joined the women for supper.

EDENDALE.— The monthly meeting of the Edendale branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union which was well attended, was presided over by Mrs McLeod. It was decided to send a donation of one guinea to the Makogai Leper Fund. Mrs A. P. Smith (Winton) gave a talk on the work of the Women’s Division housekeeping scheme. Mrs Irvine thanked Mrs Smith. Competitions for the day resulted: Sugar bag apron, Mrs Morris 1, Mrs Rewcastle 2, Miss R. Pow 3. Cheese scones, Mrs Rewcastle 1, Miss R. Pow 2, Miss D. Pow 3.

FAIRFAX— Mrs Edie presided over a fair number of members at the monthly meeting. A motion of sympathy was passed with the Mclntosh, Brunton and Findlay families in their recent bereavements. A resolution was carried to send a donation of money to the leper fund. The roll call, “A knitting hint,” was well responded to. Competitions resulted: Jar of flowers, Mrs Mitchell 1, Mrs Darragh 2, Mrs Edie 3. Novelty article, Mrs Ward 1, Mesdames Brown, Gorrie and Fleck 2 equal. The hostesses were Mrs Barclay and Mrs Carmichael.

INVERCARGILL.— The monthly meeting of the Invercargill branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was well attended/ Mrs R. A. Riddle presiding. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mesdames Fairweather rnd McKenzie and sympathy in their illness was extended to Mesdames Russell, McDowell and Parsons. It was decided to help the leper appeal and the Disabled Soldiers’ Shop and also to assist Mrs Russell, who has established a “stork box” for the housekeeping scheme. Mrs Dennis, provincial president, who was

a visitor to the meeting, explained about the Fighter Aeroplane Fund sponsored by the Women’s Division. The sum of £2/8/7 was collected in response to this appeal. Mr T. C. Meadows gave a talk on gardening. Mesdames Riddle and Powell were first equal in the narcissi competition.

HEDDON BUSH.— Mrs Montgomery presided over a fair attendance of members at the monthly meeting. Parcels of clothing wers received for refugee children. The 'dressmaking class is now finished, and as there was no mannequin parade held because of petrol restrictions, Miss George was made a presentation at the final lesson. Competitions resulted: —Best bloom, Mrs Ridd 1, Miss June Homer 2, Mrs T. Horner 3; best buttonhole, Mrs Keown 1, Mrs T. Horner 2, Miss Fleming 3.

KAUANA.—The branch ' celebrated its eighth birthday at a social afternoon in the Pukearuhe hall at which there was a large attendance of members and friends. During the afternoon items were contributed by Mrs Hay. Winners of competitions were Mesdames W. Gill, Hay and J. Gill. Miss I'. Bartlett was the winner of the - lucky cup. The candles on the birthday cake, which was made and given by the president, were lit by Mrs Calder. They were then extinguished by Mrs R. Anderson, jun. Mrs W. J. Cowie, a former member of the branch, at present visiting in the district, cut the cake. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames J. G ;n '”” 1 T ’”"*
