DIRECT HIT’S DEATH
Invercargill Track Work
F. LANGFORD’S TEAM
AT WINTON
Nominations for the Dunedin meeting are due on Tuesday.
Queen Balboa, the dam of King’s Chorus, has been booked to Man’s Pal. Named
The four-year-old mare by Irish Lancer from Celerity II (the dam of Boswell) has been named Princess Gainsborough. Stud Item
Fleet Lady (the dam of Spendthrift) produced a colt foal by Salmagundi at the Chelandry Stud during the week.
By Solicitor General
Price Brothers, who own and bred Wild Career and Secret Flight, have a two-year-old half brother to this pair in a colt by Solicitor General. He is an outstanding youngster but because of his size he has not yet been put into work. Promising Juvenile
The Nigger Minstrel-Queen Balboa three-year-old in J. A. Rowland’s team has made good progress in the work he has done. The brother to Kings Chorus has grown into a fine type of juvenile and is one vzho has created a good impression.
For Wingatui R. E. McLellan intends racing Sir Denis, Doubleack, Ackemma and Sailing Lady at the Dunedin spring meeting. Although they have had no really fast work all have done well in their tasks to date and they will not require much fast work and racing to be produced at their best. New Colours
Airline has apparently been secured by Messrs E. and T. Timpany, of Woodlands, as he raced in their colours at Ashburton and Geraldine. In the racing he has done Airline has impressed as one likely to make a name for himself as a stayer. He is still trained by P. T. Hogan at Washdyke. Heddon Bush Team
The majority of steeplechasers raced by F. J. Boyle during the winter are spelling at present, but he has Tnplecone, Jalna and Merry Simon in work for early spring meetings. Merry Simon will probably be raced over hurdles. Jalna, a five-year-old gelding by Rosenor from Wanaka, attracted attention when first worked at Invercargill, but he has raced only once. By Salmagundi
Four Salmagundi two-year-olds were sprinted down the course at Invercargill yesterday morning. The gelding from Ace of Hearts, which was inclined to run about a lot, showed a smart turn of speed in leading the other three home. This youngster is a nippy galloper and should come to haqd early. The gelding from Direct Hit finished strongly to beat the Brightmark gelding and the Glentruin’s Daughter filly which were together. The Direct Hit youngster pleased greatly in his effort. The rather apt name of Torpedo is being claimed for him. Nightdress In Form
Nightdress upset calculations in the Geraldine Cup yesterday. He has always demonstrated that he can run out a mile and a-quarter, but his form has been far from consistent and he has not been a good horse to follow. There are few better-bred gallopers about than Nightdress as he was got by Nightmarch from Ball Dress, the dam of Dress Parade and Day Dress. Ball Dress was sired by Winning Hit from Equipment, by Martian, from Tomorrow, by Bill of Portland from Elusive by Trenton—a line which has produced a host of champions for the Clifford stable. At Winton
At Winton F. Langford has the three-year-old filly Sally Sage, a half-sister by Philamor to Half and Half and In Flight, in work. She is a good type of filly and has already demonstrated her ability to gallop. Scotch Queen, a sister * to Lochie River, is also a regular worker. She was hunted during the winter and shaped encouragingly. Langford is also working several pacers as follows: Irish Guy, a three-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Ladj’ Direct, a three-year-old gelding by Quite Sure from Godetia, a six-year-old mare by Wrack from Myra Bingen and a niare by Native King from Olive Nelson. Both the Quite Sure juveniles are engaged in the Southland classic events this season and are promising young pacers. Direct Hit Dead The death occurred during the week of Direct Hit, the dam of Shillelagh Wood, Lochcorrib, Eallybrit and Sister Modesta. Direct Hit had foaled a colt to Sir Simper but bo® the mare and colt died. She was bred by Mr J. Grigg and was in her twenty-third year at ®e time of her death. Direct Hit did not race and at the stud she was bred from by Mr C. Gardner, Mr M. Hanley, who raced most of her progeny, and Mr W. E. Hazlett, who purchased her a couple of seasons back. By Fleetham she was out of Lucky Shot, by Calibre from Tapuwai, by Seaton Deleaval and traces back to ®e famous Mermaid taproot. Direct Hit will always be remembered for ®e fine jumpers she left, as Shillelagh Wood finished second in ®e Grand National Steeplechase and Ballybit’s successes included the Otago Steeplechase and'' Great Western ■ ■ Steeplechase. Lochcorrib has raced only once, winning the Otago Hunt Cup Steeplechase earlier in the month and a bright future is held for her
At Invercargill The No. 1 grass track was available for galloping at Invercarg® yesterday morning but not a great deal of fast work was attempted. Sailing Lady was under a strong hold in running a mile in lmin 58sec, the first half in 57sec Sparkle and Milford did a couple of rounds at a solid pace, coming home the last half in 55 2-ssec. Both were anxious to do better. Heidelberg and a novice companion were not troubled to come home the last half in 59 2-ssec while Erie’s Ruin shaded Colonel Rouge over half a mile in 54 3-ssec. Eire’s Ruin has grown into a good type of : .iare and her work to date has beeri full of promise. Erin’s Star and the Colonel Cygnus-Wild Erin mare were together at the end of five furlongs in lmin 9see, the last half in 56sec. The Nigger Minstrel-Morse Signal gelding and Sir Denis completed five furlongs in lmin 9 3-ssec, ®e last half in 55 3-ssec. Several other horses got ®rough useful tasks,' but. the morning’s work was not of great interest.
