AUCKLAND’S GIFT OF FIGHTERS
THREE TO BE BOUGHT In a letter thanking the people of Auckland for their generous gift of £34,000 for the purchase of fighter planes for Britain, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser) suggested that the money should be. devoted to the outright purchase of three Spitfires, which would be named Auckland I, II and 111, rather than be divided into the smaller portions which, without buying them outright, would enable more machines to be named after Auckland.
To this suggestion Sir Henry Horton, managing director of The New Zealand Herald, which raised the money, has agreed, stating that he was sure it would meet the desire of the contributors.
Auckland will thus have three planes, compared with Southland’s two.
