HIGH PROPORTKIN OF RATES PAH)

MEETING >OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

The sum of £2397/15/4 had been paid by way of rates before the last day for discount allowance, stated the clerk of the Bluff Borough Council at the meeting of the council. This represented 44.5 per cent, of the rates and was the highest proportion paid for the past six years.

There were present: The Mayor (Mr J. Cameron) and Crs the Hon. T. F. Doyle, A. E. Budd, C. G. Pilcher, W. P. Butler, L. Newman, O. F. Metzger, G. Moir. The town clerk (Mr H. A. Ferguson) was also present. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr Budd) reported on his visit with Cr Pilcher and the town clerk to Invercargill to meet the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of National Service.

Action in this matter was held over pending receipt of enrolment forms, and the visit of Major-General R. Young. Water service connections were grantto D. Cheyne, M. V. B. Craig and W. M. Tonkinson.

Crs Newman and Metzger were appointed as Finance and Records Subcommittee on the Emergency Precautions Committee in place- of Crs Muir and Budd, who are already on that committee as representatives of other organizations.

The town clerk submitted a report dealing with fire prevention on Bluff Hill. The council approved of the draft clauses, as amended. They are to :be submitted to the Bluff Harbour Board and the Ocean Beach freezing company foi' ratification. ■ '

CONCERT FOR RED CROSS A concert in aid of the Red Cross funds was presented in the Town Hall by the Bluff School of American Tap Dancing. The programme, which was arranged by file director, Mr Ivan Denton, was enjoyed by a large audience.

The programme was as follows:— Songs, Misses Topping, G. Hart and J. Hodges, Messrs S. West, W. Williamson, C. Ward, A. Batcheler, C. Edwards; solo dances,. Misses Joan Dimond, Maidie Hughes, Mr Ivan Denton; part songs and poi dances, Bluff Haere Tonu Party; ballet, Misses Maureen Spencer, Raywin Waitiri, Bessie McQuarrie, Rona Denton, Vera Harland, Joan Dimond. The accompanists were Messrs N. Bradshaw and I. Denton. Lighting effects were by Mr Brian Harland.
