BARGE CONCENTRATIONS BOMBED

GERMAN TARGETS ATTACKED BY R.A.F.

(United Press Association—Telegraph Copyright) (Received September 18, 11.40 p.m.) LONDON, September 18.

Once again the bombers of the Royal Air Force have been raiding barge concentrations, bases and military targets in Germany and German-occupied territory. During yesterday British bombers went out to locate concentrations of barges in the Channel ports and found that they had scattered in the rough weather. They reported the whereabouts of the German ships and the bombers went out at night to carry out their work of destruction. The action was described by the Air Ministry as “an attack on a large scale successfully completed.” Targets were also attacked in German-occupied territory and in Germany itself.

Several German planes were shot down over south-east England last night. These were mostly Messerschmitt 109’s, which carry one bomb. Since the first air raid alarm of the morning at 6 o’clock, London has had five alarms. In the early alarms the raiders came singly. During the second alarm the raiders came over at such a height that they could not be seen. However, one plane gave itself away by the puffs of vapour from its exhaust and anti-aircraft shells were soon seen bursting around it. The plane finally turned away. One of the places hit by German bombs is the famous Lambeth Walk market. A bomb fell on the lawn of Westminster Abbey, but no damage was done to the Abbey. There have been casualties among policemen and firemen in the latest raid.
