Mainly Fair And Mild (Special to The Times) WELLINGTON, September 18. Following is the special weather forecast for Southland issued by the Meteorological Office, Wellington.— Freshening north-westerly winds with some scattered rain on the coast and in the west, but weather otherwise fair and mild. Seas moderate to rather rough. Following is the Dominion forecast:— Weather for the most part fair to fine with a few isolated showers over the Auckland peninsula, however, and scattered rain in the western, and far southern areas of the South Island. Temperatures milder. General Situation. —An extensive anticyclone is centred over the north Tasman Sea. Pressure is relatively low to the south and south-east of New Zealand and a vigorous depression is approaching Tasmania from the west. Winds.—From a westerly quarter prevailing. Moderate to fresh generally and later becoming strong in exposed positions south of Taranaki. Seas (New Zealand waters). —Slight or moderate generally at first but rising south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux. Straits. Eastern Tasman Sea.—Moderate to fresh south-westerly winds and moderate seas in the northern portion; strong north-westerly winds and rough seas in the southern portion. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was overcast but fine. A light westerly wind blew during the day. Hie weather at 1 o’clock this morning was cool, calm and slightly overcast.
