YEAR’S ACTIVITIES REVIEWED
HIGH SCHOOL OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL REPORT
The activities of the year are reviewed in the annual report of the Southland High School Old Boys’ Association, which will be presented at the annual meeting on September 28. “The Swimming Club membership shows an increase-from last season of 22,” states the report. “A carnival held in February proved successful, although a loss of 4/- was incurred. The attendance at the club hour, although good at the beginning of the season, fell away towards the finish. The. club was represented at the national championships by A. C. Millar and A. Brown. In the Southland championships the club was also well represented, a number of titles being secured by members. "The three cricket teams entered in' the competitions had a successful season, The senior eleven tied with Invercargill for first place and the second eleven won the Junior A competition. The club material is in good condition and a good start financially for the incoming season is assured. J. C. Scandrett and C. W. Warburton gained representative honours and G. Agnew and B. Clark played in the junior representative eleven in Dunedin. “Because of the fact that most of the members of the Discussions Club have enlisted for active service, activities have for some time been suspended. It is hoped, however, that such a useful club will once again enjoy success when the war is over.
“Despite the fact that the Football Club has lost many of its members through enlistments in the armed forces the season can be regarded as a very satisfactory one. The senior team, kept up to strength by enthusiastic juniors, ■gave a good account of itself. D. G. Gavan, T. T. Mackie, I. B. McCurdy and R. H. Mackrell gained representative honours and J. R. Cameron and E. Jackson played for the town team. The third grade team was runners-up in its grade. “The monthly meetings held each month in the Club Hotel throughout the winter have once again proved a success. The war has greatly reduced attendances, but nevertheless some very instructive and enjoyable evenings have been held.
SCHOOL BAND “The School Band is now so much a part of the musical life of the community that it has almost come to be looked on as a Southland band. Their keenness was rewarded this year by an invitation to attend the Anzac Day celebrations in Wellington. Their playing, marching and general behaviour not only brought great credit on the band itself but on the school, and all those willing helpers who did so much to help the band to collect the money necessary to equip themselves with uniforms, capes and then finally the trip to Wellington. The association congratulates the band and also Mr J. L. Napier for his enthusiasm and skill. “The president once again wishes to place on record his appreciation of the way the executive committee has attended meetings and helped, by their enthusiasm, to make his year of office so enjoyable. The war once again has left its mark for several members of the executive have enlisted for active service. During the year, because of this reason, we have had three treasurers and two secretaries. The executive co-opted the services of members to fill these vacancies and our thanks are extended to them for so readily helping us out of our difficulties in this direction. In particular, the executive wishes to place on record the valuable services given by Mr W. Stewart, who took Mr Bruce Macalister’s place as treasurer. Mr Stewart is himself now in camp and Mr S. Richardson took over his duties. We are also indebted to the secretary, Mr Owen Williams, who gave us much valuable assistance. His resignation, because of his enlistment, was accepted with regret. His place was filled by Mr lan McCurdy. “The number of financial members now stands at 403. This number does not include those members in the Wellington and Dunedin branches. Fortythree new members joined the association during the year.”
