COMMUNITY SING AT WAIKAKA VALLEY FLAG COLLECTION IN AID OF PARCELS FUND A successful community sing, conducted under the auspices of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, was held at Waikaka Valley, when a concert party from Gore was present. Mrs Henry Smith was chairman and extended a welcome to the Gore party. A flag appeal on behalf of the soldiers’ parcels fund realized £l4/9/3, and an electric iron given by the Southland Electric Power Supply brought more than £34 for general patriotic purposes. Mr Colin Weir was the auctioneer and he was assisted by Mr H. P. Mclntyre. Mr H. H. Brown, of Gore, was the leader at the sing and was assisted by Mrs Brown. Members of the concert party from Gore were: Misses Janet Cunningham, and Noeline McKmnel (Daisy Mcßae School of .Dancing); Mr Colin Weir (solos), Mrs Miller (solos), Messrs C. McLeod and W. D. Shelton (humorous recitations), Mr P. Kelly (humorous songs), and Mesdames Brown and Miller (piano duet). Much of the success of the sing was due to the efficient screening of the words of the choruses by Mr H. L. Smith, of Gore. RETURNED SOLDIERS
A pair of prismatic binoculars in a leather case, which had been presented by an anonymous donor, were handed to 2nd-Lieutenant T. L. Macdonald by the president (Mr P. R. Stewart), at a meeting of the executive of the Gore Returned Soldiers’ Association. Mr Stewart welcomed Mr Macdonald to the meeting.
Mr Macdonald expressed his appreciation of the gift, which, he said, would be doubly useful as he had recently taken a course in signals and vzould probably be posted to a branch of that unit. He asked Mr Stewart to convey his sincere thanks to the donor. Mr Macdonald gave an interesting talk on life in the Officers’ Training Corps. Those present at the meeting were: —Messrs P. R. Stewart (president), J. McQueen, J. Ritchie, T. F. Rusbridge, A. L. McDowell, E. J. Columb, M. Green, F. M. Murray, C. M. Wilson, A. C. Steel, W. H. Sadlier, J. Adams and G. L. Gerken (secretary). 2nd-Lieuten-ant T. L. Bacdonald represented the West Otago Sub-association. A motion of sympathy was carried with Mr J. Williams (Mataura) in the death of his sister. One new member was elected.
The secretary reported that the financial membership of the association was now 442, compared with 387 for the same period last year. The financial membership of the sub-associations were as follows: West Otago 71, Lumsden 49, and Mataura 40. The general secretary (Wellington) wrote stating that in addition to the books and periodicals sent on troopships proceeding overseas, these were also being supplied to libraries in military camps and flying schools throughout the Dominion. The heavy demand on books for military libraries had exhausted reserve stocks and supplies of good books, magazines and periodicals were urgently needed for the new libraries which were to be established. The number of books required was 6000. Dominion headquarters requested all associations to endeavour to eclipse the previous totals of their collections.
The matter was left in the hands of the secretary and Mr Rusbridge. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of congratulation to MajorGeneral Sir Andrew Russell on his appointment as Inspector-General of the New Zealand Forces.

DAMAGE DONE BY VANDALS
Damage to property owned by sporting bodies and to public gardens in the town has been done by vandals, mostly children, recently, and during the winter months.
During an informal discussion at the annual meeting of the Gore Tennis Club members expressed concern at the damage done to the club's pavilion by unauthorized persons during the winter months. It was stated that entrance had been gained to the pavilion by the forcing of locks and a considerable amount of crockery had been smashed. Every year the Gore Club had experienced the same trouble and it was agreed that some steps should be taken to make the building more secure.
The pavilion of the Citizens Tennis Club has also suffered at the hands of vandals. Entrance was gained to the pavilion by some means and considerable damage was done by the intruders. Quite recently a party of children was heard in the pavilion, it was stated, and by the noise made the contents of the building were receiving rough handling.
has also been experienced by the borough gardener recently through children riding bicycles through a plot of daffodils behind the monument and deliberately kicking the heads off flowers and smashing the leaves. A newly-laid plot of antirrhinums had also been badly damaged by children running over- the and trampling the plants underfoot. t PERSONAL , Mi' C. P. Edwards, manager of the Gore branch of the Union Bank of Australia Ltd., left for Dunedin yesterday on a short holiday visit. Mr Robert Barton, who has completed his course at Massey Agricultural College, has received an appointment to the staff as assistant in research work on sheep husbandry. Mr Barton is the second son of the Rev. F. B. Barton and Mrs Barton, of Gore.
