FIRM MARKET AT BURNSIDE
Small Entries Of Sheep And Cattle KEEN DEMAND FOR COWS AND HEIFERS (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, September 18. Both sheep and cattle had a firm market at Burnside today, small entries being forward. Fat cattle had a much smaller yarding, 250 being penned against 385 for last week. The quality generally was very good, with several consignments of prime heavy bullocks yarded and not so many medium sorts as usual. Cows and heifers were in sho; - t supply and the demand throughout was keen. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £27/2/6, prime heavy bullocks £2l/2/6 to £23/2/6, medium bullocks £l5/17/6 to £l9/7/6, light bullocks from £l2/2/6, extra prime cows and heifers to £l9 12/6, prime cows and heifers £l3/17/6 to £l6/2/6, medium cows and heifers £lO/12/6 to £l2/7/6, light cows and heifers from £7/17/6. There was a medium yarding of stores and a very strong demand for any cattle showing. Breeding and boner cows sold firm at late rates. Vealers were in short supply and sold keenly. Dairy cattle were in short supply and met a keen demand for the best close-to-profit sorts. Backward and low-conditioned cows sold at late lates. SMALL FAT SHEEP ENTRY In the fat sheep section a small entry was forward, 1141 being penned against 2165 for last week. The quality was up and they were firmer by 2/- to 3/a head. Hoggets met a keen sale. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 53/-, prime wethers 44/- to 48/-, medium wethers 36/- to 40/-, light wethers from 30/-, extra prime heavy ewes to 47/3, prime heavy ewes 37/6 to 42/-, medium ewes 33/- to 36/-, light ewes down to 26/9. Three spring lambs were penned and sold keenly at up to 38/6. Fat pigs had a medium yarding, which met a somewhat erratic market. Baconers were slightly easier in value, while porkers sold firmly at late rates. A small yarding of stores met a very keen demand, with values fully firm on late rates.
KEEN COMPETITION AT ADDINGTON STORE SHEEP VALUES UP TO RECENT RATES (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, September 18. A small entry of store sheep at Addington today met keen competition, with values fully up to recent rates. Hoggets sold particularly well. The fat sheep entry of 3000 was of mixed quality. There was a strong demand with prices 2/- a head above those of last w€ck. Prime heavy wethers made 47/- to 54/-, medium wethers 39/- to 46/6, prime ewes 40/- to 52/-, ordinary ewes 30/- to 39/6. There was a fat cattle entry of 388 and a keen sale for the best beef. Values were fully firm. Plain sorts met slower inquiry. Good beef made 52/6 per 1001 b, best 57/7, prime heavy steers £lB/10/- to £25/7/6, medium £ll/10/- to £lB, best heifers £l4 to £2l/7/6 and others to £l3/10/-. Best cows made £ll to £l7/12/6; others to £lO. With a large yarding of porkers values eased 3/- to 4/-. A big yarding of baconers met a weaker sale. The pork average was 8d to 9td and bacon 7£d to Bd. MINING RETURNS WEST COAST DREDGES (United Press Association) GREYMOUTH, September 18. Returns for the West Coast dredges during the first half of September are as follows:—Barrytown: 246 ounces for 211 hours and 78,000 yards; Kanieri, 467 ounces, for 204 hours and 93,000 yards; Arahura, 428 ounces for 264 hours and 166,000 yards. Wright, Ltd., has received the following cabled report on the Colombo tea auction of September 17: At yesterday’s sale of 1,250,0001 b, prices for common grades advanced, about Jd. Medium teas also advanced {d to gd. Fine quality kinds were firm. A total of 1,250,0001 b has been catalogued for auction next week.
