ON INVERCARGILL TRACKS
Glenora Boy Is Well
Placed
TWO-YEAR-OLDS BY SALMAGUNDI
Weights for the New Zealand Cup are due on Friday. Hurdle Recruit Crack o’ Dawn is an interesting newcomer to the hurdle ranks at Geraldine tomorrow. Better Placed Rebel Star is better placed over six furlongs tomorrow than he was over seven furlongs at Ashburton. Stud Item Fairform, the dam of Tauramai, Charmaine, Passaform and others, is safely in foal to Sir Simper. Big Dividend Royal Lancer, who won the Novice Stakes at Ashburton on Saturday, paid more than a quarter of a century on the win machine. Regular Workers Aspire and Blissful Lady are regular workers at Invercargill and both have done well in what they have attempted. Sailing Lady Sailing Lady has been taken along quietly and she is gradually rounding into shape. She appears to have settled down a lot. A Useful Stayer Airline is a good staying hack—he has been entered for the New Zealand Cup —and he may shape well over nine furlongs tomorrow. Will Do Better Wild Coon ran a creditable race at Ashburton to finish close up behind the placed horses and may improve on this effort at the Geraldine meeting. Has Trained On Since her race at the Otago Hunt meeting, Sparkle has carried on the right way and the Colonel Cygnus mare looks a picture at the present time. ’hen next produced she should be heard from. Happy Man Happy Man promises to be a firm favourite for the Orari Trot at Geraldine. He finished a good second to Wainoni Jack at Ashburton and was regarded as unlucky. Novice Prospect
Marco Polo is a youthful pacer who may be expected to break his novice status at short notice. He is engaged at the Geraldine meeting and will be bracketed with Castlebar. Cup Candidate
The New Zealand Cup candidate Doubleack has made good progress in his work, although he has not attempted anything serious so far. He looks a better horse this season than when he raced last term. By Irish Lancer
The two Irish Lancer four-year-olds Sir Denis and Erin’s Star, in R. E. McLellan’s team have both furnished a lot since raced last year. Sir Denis, a half-brother to Milford, has grown into an upstanding horse while Erin’s Star has filled out. The latter is a halfsister to Beam, Kippen, Cintilla and others. Now Nine Years Old Queen of Song, now nine years old, has been nominated for the Highweight Handicap, to be run at the Kurow .-eeting next week. She has been in work at Washdyke for some time past. A Good Effort Burt Scott put up a good performance to run second to Braw Lass in the final event at Ashburton and but for breaking after going half a mile would have made matters more interesting. In breaking Burt Scott badly interfered with Mortlake, who almost came down. Promoted Hack Clinch, who sprang a surprise in the Avondale Cup, is a four-year-old by Appellant from Marble Bell. He won three hack races last season, and in his only appearance in open company was dected favourite for the York Handicap at Ellerslie. He let his backers down, and did not start again until Saturday. Jiampion Plate Winner
Beau Leon, winner of the Avondale Champion Plate and the Avondale Guineas, is by Beau Pere from Lady Bete, an English bred mare, who also left Galilee. This was his second start this season, having finished second to Classic at the Pakuranga Handicap last month. As a two-year-old, Beau Leon had 14 starts, finishing third three times, and scoring a win in his last start. Glenora Boy
Winning Rival is not engaged in the Geraldine Cup tomorrow :t Glenora Boy, Swordstick, The Wrecker, Petersham and Dunstan are. Glenora Boy, who finished second in the Ashburton Handicap on Saturday will meet all four on 21b better terms for beating them 'at Ashburton over the same distance. This
shows the folly of declaring the handicaps for the Geraldine meeting before the Ashburton fixture.
Long Odds
When Royal Order won the principal handicap at Mentone a week or two ago his price was so long that it was assumed that his chance was not fancied by the stable. It transpires that his connections won a nice amount for a small outlay. Royal Order broke down when racing last January, and as he developed a bowed tendon it appeared that he was finished. J. had-the leg fired, and it is now regretted that the Limond gelding was not nominated for the cups. A Good Type
The Nigger Minstrel-Morse Signal three-year-old in R. E. McLellan’s stable has grown into a fine horse, while he has completed his work so far in sound style. The fact that his dam has produced winners in Doubleack, Trebleack, Waitoru and Ackemma is one reason why such interest is being shown in his progress, but as far as appearances go he favours his sire. Two-year-olds
Mr W. E. Hazlett has three two-year-olds in his team, all being by Salmagundi. A gelding from Brightmark, the dam of Kippen, Beam and Cintilla, has done more work than the others and' has grown into a good type of youngster. A filly from Glentruin’s daughter (by Woodend-Glentruin) is neatly made and has shaped well in what she has done. She is a halfsister to Baitruin. A gelding from Direct Hit, the dam of Ballybrit and Shillelaghwood, is more compactly made than the other two. He has furnished a lot since first brought in and is one who should race well early. All three are to be spelled shortly.
Promising Juveniles F. W. Ellis’s team at the present time includes five three-year-olds and as all were worked last season they may be expected to race well this term. Melodist, the Nigger Minstrel filly from Steeton has grown into a good type, and resembles her dam in many respects. This youngster attracted attention by the manner in which she completed her work last season and she has made good progress in what she has done so far. The geldings from Thornton and Cough respectively have shaped well, but the Nigger Minstrel-Tea Party gelding has not progressed as expected because of a cold. Philibeg, has grown into a good type of juvenile and the halfbrother to Peony Rose promises to race well early, Ashburton Form
Commenting on the running at the Ashburton County meeting on Saturday The Press, Christchurch, states: — Roy Bun created a big surprise as he had. not raced for some time, and his best performances last season were over longer distances. He won the Geraldine Cup 12 months ago. Night Hawk gave a satisfactory display after giving some trouble at the start. The veteran Rebel Star made a bold showing and only submitted in the last few chains. Royal Chief got away much more smartly than expected, and when he moved up on the rails beginning the run home he threatened danger, but although he did not improve his position to much extent his final work was encouraging. Toro Koura showed a turn of speed, and his effort suggested he will be more in evidence later. Willie Win was last away and was always well back. Shikari gave a long display of rearing at the start and difficulty was experienced in getting him to settle down, and eventually he failed to get away well. He soon made up a good deal of the lost ground, and was well enough placed a furlong from home to be still a danger, but he was out of the tussle from then onwards. Night Dress ran a good race and is a likely improver. Passaform was paraded in show-like condition, but another race or two will work a big improvement in him. Avondale Stakes Winner
Miss Baffles, winner of the Avondale I Stakes on Saturday, is a bay filly by Baffles from Tractrix by Tractor from Guizark, and was purchased by her present owner, Mr§ F. J. Farrell, of Hamilton, for 90 guineas at Trentham last January. She is trained by A. Cook at Te Awamutu. Tractrix is not in the Stud Book, so that Miss Baffles is not registered. She is the first of her sire’s progeny to race, so that the two juvenile races to date, the Wanganui Debutante Stakes and the Avondale Stakes, have been won by progeny of sires having their first representatives on the turf. Baffles is a half-brother by Blandford to Manna, and was sold as a yearling for 6000 guineas. His darn Waffles is by Buckwheat from Lady Mischief by St. Simon. Baffles is now the property of Mrs R. Carrington, of Hamilton, owner of Hunting Song. After the running of Saturday’s race Miss Baffles was purchased by Mr E. G. Bridgens, president of the Auckland Trotting Club, for 500 guineas. She is to remain under the care of her present trainer. River Plate, runner-up to Miss Baffles, is a brown gelding by Iliad from Gay Marigold, by Grand Knight from Queen March by Lucullus, and is owned by his breeders. Messrs Nicholson and Davis, of Auckland. River Plate was bred at the Elderslie Stud.
