WYNDHAM
WORK OF DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL , WELCOME TO NEW RECTOR
At the monthly meeting of the committee of the Wyndham District High School the following members were present:—Messrs W. F. Bennetto (chairman), O. Traynor (secretary), D. N. A. Macpherson, A. A. Wilson, W. Thompson, C. Bain and M. McFadyen. The rector, Mr N. Macdonald, was also in attendance.
The chairman extended a warm welcome to Mr Macdonald, who was making his first appearance at a committee meeting since taking over the rectorship of the school. Mr Macdonald, he said, had taught in the school about 13 years ago as an assistant.
Mr Macdonald thanked Mr Bennetto for his welcome. It was decided that the Southland Education Board be advised that a deputation consisting of the chairman and Messrs Macpherson and Wilson intended waited on Mr S. Rice (chairman) with a view to making further representations about capitation. The rector reported that the primary roll stood at 117 with the possibility of two or three more admissions at an early date; but these would be countered by three or four withdrawals. At the same period last year the roll stood at 115, but today the staffing was not so satisfactory. The average attendance had been fairly good, the percentage being 92. The secondary roll stood at 16 with the average attendance 15.4. The chairman and Mr Wilson were appointed the visiting committee for the next term.
It was decided that the visiting committee go into the question of fumigating the school and draft a letter to the Southland Education Board drawing attention to the state of the building and its inadequate appointments. A copy of the letter is also to be forwarded to the member for the district and the Minister of Education.
LADIES’ GOLF CLUB The final match of the B grade championship was played between Mrs Dunbar and Miss F. Milne, the latter winning by 4 and In the morning the game was fairly even, Mrs Dunbar being 1 up at the 18th hole, and in the afternoon she was 1 up at the 27th. Miss Milne then started to play on top form and won the next six holes and the game. ’ A. AND P. SOCIETY The committee of the Wyndham Agricultural and Pastoral Society met in the Murihiku hall. The retiring president (Mr R. Wylie) presided. Mr R. F. Dickie was elected president for the 1940-41 season, with’ Messrs E. Rabbidge and Rolf Clark as vice-presidents. The district representatives were all re-elected. Mr Dickie was elected to represent the society on the board of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association.
Congratulations were extended to Mr A. H. Holms (a member of the committee) on his election to the board of directors of the Southland Association.
