AUSTRALIAN TURF REVIEW

EARLY CLASSIC RACE DECIDED ROYAL ORDER’S SURPRISE SUCCESS By SIR MODRED The eagerly expected Red Cross meeting at A.J.C. headquarters takes place on Saturday. A meeting between Ajax and Beaulivre over one mile would create wonderful interest. Following several place efforts Pantoon (N.Z.) won for J. Fryer in Melbourne on Saturday. ( The Mentone Turf Club’s important Cup meeting takes place in Melbourne on Saturday. High Caste is being consistently raced into the best of form for spring meetings. Growing feeble the crack racehorse and stout sire David was destroyed in New South Wales. Beaulivre retains his position as Epsom Handicap favourite, with High Caste next in order. Mildura surprised Mr E. J. Watt and trainer G. Price by a recent win. at a Sydney meeting. Jockey D. Munro states that Beaulivre is apt to loaf when he heads his rivals in races. At a Warwick Farm meeting G. Price produced Beaulivre, Mildura and Pinero as winners. Recent form justifies Reading holding his place as first fancy for the Metropolitan Handicap. It is noticeable that M. McCarten has been riding Beau Vite in track work at Randwick. GOOD RECOVERY Twice suffering a broken leg and after months in hospital W. Elliott is winning races in Melbourne. The Mentone Cup, of £4OO (1.1 m. will be the attraction for Melbourne racing patrons on Saturday. The. five-year-old gelding Salivant, by Salmagundi, is racing well at present in N.S.W. G. Young won a good race in Sydney last week. G. Young, jun., piloted his father’s horse. Last season’s experience suggests that Beau Vite has yet to reach his top form. The Port Adelaide Guineas (9fur. 40yds) was decided on Saturday and won by Waxwings, who is owned and raced by the wife of the Governor of South Australia. Lady Muriel BarclayHarvey’s colt is by Curialis (imp., and son of Spion Kop, by Spearmint, by Carbine) from All Chatter, by Magpie (imp.). The colt is a V.R.C. Derby candidate.

One of the first of the principal classic events of the spring season in Melbourne was decided on Saturday when the Moonee Valley Stakes, of £lO5O, including a trophy valued at £5O, for three-year-olds, special weights (lm.) was run off. The winner Sun Valley is a son of Manitoba (imp. and by Phalaris) from Golden Gondola (imp.), by Golden Myth. The winner started in 11 races last season, winning three and recording three seconds. The English horse Manitoba is being represented for the first time by three-year-olds. - Mr W. T. Hazlett has been mating a number of his young mares in Victoria from the Chelandry Stud with the Phalaris horse. The progeny of Manitoba are proving very smart gallopers in Australia. Sun Valley has engagements ahead in the V.R.C. Derby and Melbourne Cup among other valuable events. The colt second in the Stakes was Warbird, by Miracle or Shell Transport. Third berth was filled by Industry, by Caithness (imp. and by Coronach, a Derby winner now in New Zealand). HIGH CASTE’S WIN i When he won the Flying Handicap (6Kur.) at Victoria Park (Sydney), on August 28 High Caste (9.11) defeated Early Bird (8.13) by a head, with Mohican (8.11) half a head away third. There were critics who considered that the winner should have been capable of an easier victory. The race was run in 1.19 J and this was good time. The horses placed behind the New Zealander have also to be classed as two of Sydney’s brilliant gallopers. The five-year-old mare Early Bird, by The Buzzard (imp.), is one of the best mares in Australia, while the recent displays of Mohican point to the son of Moabite (imp.) ranking as above the ordinary in point of merit. With the A.J.C. spring meeting more than a month away at the time the heavily-topped High Caste appears to have raced in a very favourable light as a pupil of J. T. Jamieson—the son of Bulandshar (imp., N.Z.) will be really wanted for Randwick when the A.J.C. meeting opens on October 5. Owned by Mr J. Richardson, of Dunedin, the New Zealand-bred horse Royal Order broke down on the training tracks in Melbourne. He was almost a cripple when the entries for the Cups closed. However, on August 31 he unexpectedly turned up io defeat a strong field in the Waverley Handicap, of £3OO at the Mentone R.C. meeting. Trained by J. Fryer the son of Limond from Anklet and now a six-ydar-old horse fought out a stern finish to defeat Macßobb, a strong favourite, by three-quarters of a length in 2min 41sec. The sturdy son of Limond has been a good winner in Victoria for Mr Richardson at remunerative prices. He was quoted at better, than a score chance in his latest success. He gave promise of staying on as a two-year-old before he became known to the Dominion public as a racehorse.
