PATRIOTIC WORK IN DISTRICT COMMUNITY SING RAISES £299 A report of the activities of the Balfour Patriotic Committee was submitted to a general meeting of the committee. Mr A. Orr presided over Mesdames D. McDonald, L. J. Sparks, R. Grant, R. T. Wilson, W. Orr, J. McLean, G. McCaldon, W. Tregonning, A. Liddell, F. West, J. O’Connor, J. Joyce, jun, Misses L. “Sheed, E. McLean, L. Baird, M. L. Liddell; Messrs L. J. Sparks (secretary), J. Liddell, A. C. Witting, D. J. McLean, D. Casey, R. T. Wilson, A. Rasmussen, G. McCaldon, A. McLean, D. McDonald, R. Grant, J. Hood, W. Orr, E. W. Stevens, P. W. McDonald, F. Munro, J. T. Ginivan, F. West, J. R*. Keown. The chairman referred to the death of Mr J. C. Macpherson, of Riversdale, a former resident of Balfour. Mr Orr paid a tribute to the work of the late Mr Macpherson and as a mark of respect those present stood in silence. The balance-sheet of the recent community sing showed that the evening’s effort raised £299/4/7. The chairman congratulated the committee on the efficient manner in which the effort was conducted. Mr Orr stated that to date the total district contributions towards the Patriotic Fund was approximately £940. , „ „ Mrs W. Orr said that the Balfour women’s committee was credited with £lO worth of parcels and in addition £5/10/- was collected in cash. Donations of £lO and £5 were received from the Caledonian Society and the Young People’s Dance Committee for the Christmas parcel fund. Mi«s J. Joyce, jun., Miss L. Baird and Mr J. Albrecht were elected to the committee. DANCE COMMITTEE For functions held fortnightly in June, July and August the receipts of the Young People’s Dance Committee amounted to £46/16/-. This was allotted as follows: Social and benefit fund (soldiers’ parcels), £l5/3/9; soldiers farewell fund, £l4/2/6; Southland Fighter Plane Fund, £ll/0/6. A new series of functions has now been begun, the funds to go to various patriotic purposes.
