UNION CRICKET CLUB
MEMBERS ON ACTIVE SERVICE “The weather during the season was the worst experienced for many years and as a result many games were spoiled. However, when the weather permitted, some enjoyable games were played,” says the annual report of the Union Cricket Club. “The club was fortunate in obtaining a practice wicket at the High School and thanks are due to the High Schools’ Board for granting us this privilege. Practices were well attended early in the season, but fell away somewhat after Christmas. Both teams had a lean year, the senior team winning only one game. The junior team was unable to record even one point on the ladder. We wish to congratulate R. Swinney on winning the Sutton Jones Memorial trophy for the senior player with file highest aggregate score and the winners of representative honours, G. Marshall (senior) and I. Overton (junior). We also wish to extend our congratulations to the winners of the various grades and to the Marist Club for the splendid ground they have provided, thus enabling all senior games to be played on turf wickets” The report revealed that the club started the season with outstanding accounts amounting to some £l3 and finished with a debt for material of £6/10/-. Although the position had improved it was still far from good, but with subscriptions from last season amounting to £9/5/- still outstanding there was a good prospect of the club finishing the coming season with a small surplus. The club had lost two of the mainstays of the senior team, V. C. j Poole, captain the previous season, and L. M. Uttley, treasurer, who were both in Egypt on active service, and R. Howie, who left with the Forestry Company at the end of the season. To those men and to the others who had since enlisted the club placed on record its appreciation of the manner in which they had responded to the nation’s call.
