Sir Robert Anderson left Invercargill by the express last night for Wellington. He will return about the end of the week.

Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., returned to Invercargill by the express on Saturday night from Wellington. 2nd Lieutenant T. L. Macdonald, MP., arrived at Gore by Saturday night’s express from Trentham. He will report for duty at Burnham military camp on Friday. Mr W. F. Sturman, secretary of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Committee, returned to Invercargill on Saturday night after attending a conference in Wellington of patriotic council secretaries Convened by the National Patriotic Board.

Mr W. Grieve left last night for Wellington to attend the annual conference of the Motor Trades Federation. While in Wellington, Mr Grieve will interview the Postmaster-General (the Hon. P. C. Webb), on behalf of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce and the Southland Progress League, to place before him the views of these bodies on the abolition of the night clearance of mail posting boxes in Invercargill. Mr R. L. Jarman, of the Christchurch branch of the Union Bank of Australia, Ltd., has been transferred to Gore. Messrs J. R. McCulloch, N. R. Brown and H. Turnbull left Invercargill yesterday for a fortnight’s camping trip in the back country of Southland. They intend to spend some time in the Pyke Valley and at Martin’s Bay. Sergeant-Pilot R. K. Walker, of Woodlands, who left for Wellington on Friday morning, was met by some friends and well-wishers of the district and presented with a razor and a money belt. Corporal T. Denny, who is training at the N.C.O.’s camp at Burnham, has been spending leave with his parents, Mr and Mrs Hubert Denny, of Bluff. Mr J. W. Miller, of Queenstown, has been appointed coroner in place of Mr D. F. Sutherland, who has resigned, states a notice in The New Zealand Gazette.

The Hon. Mr Justice Kennedy left Dunedin yesterday morning for Wellington to attend a sitting of the Court of Appeal. Mr R. S. Dennis, of Sydney, who is making a tour of New Zealand, is at present visiting Invercargill. He is staying at the Grand Hotel. Major L. C. Forgie, accountant of the Centennial Exhibition Company, was appointed secretary of the company at a recent meeting of the directors. He takes the place of Colonel H. E. Avery, who resigned to take up a military appointment.

Lieutenant-Colonel F. K. Turnbull, D. 5.0., M.C., has been appointed officer commanding brigade units, Trentham Mobilization Camp. He succeeds Lieutenant-Colonel L. H. Jardine, D. 5.0., M.C., who has resumed command of the Taranaki Regiment for intensive training.

Richard Farrell, the Wellington boy pianist, scored a success when he appeared at the Tivoli Theatre, Melbourne, at the beginning of the month. Critics said his playing was outstanding. He also conducted the orchestra for a clever group of child performers called the “Stars of 1950.”
