MEN’S HOCKEY
ANNUAL SIX A SIDETOURNAMENT CENTRAL A WINS SENIOR DIVISION
Although rain fell all the afternoon, making playing conditions difficult ana unpleasant, the annual six-a-side men s hockey tournament conducted by the Southland Men’s Hockey Association, and held at Queen’s Park on Saturday, drew good entries and was productive of some close and interesting matches. Altogether 15 teams competed in the three grades—four in both the senior and junior sections and seven in the intermediate —and competition throughout was keen, although the interest would have been greater had the day been fine. A few teams defaulted. The* successful team in the senior grade was Central A, and Collegiate A and Civil Service were runners-up. Collegiate A was first in the intermediate section and the junior division was won by High School A. Play was very even in all grades and there were many drawn games. The standard of hockey was good considering the wet weather and the consequent condition of the grounds. The tournament was well organized and efficiently conducted and a large number of games was completed well up to time. Possibly because of the petrol restrictions there were no entries from country teams this year.
No play-off was required in the senior division as the last match in the draw was obviously the deciding one. Before this match, which was between Collegiate A and Central A, Central A and Civil Service were leading with five points and Collegiate A and Collegiate B were next with four points each. DRAWN GAME The game between Collegiate A and Central A was a draw and there was no score.. Each team thus obtained one point more, making Central A’s total six and Collegiate A’s five, bringing the latter level with Civil Service. Central A was superior on attack in the deciding game and although neither team goaled Collegiate A was on the defensive for most of the game. N. Poole saved well in the Collegiate goalmouth and was kept busy on several occasions. In the second half T. Hennessy started a good movement for Central when he ran down the centre of the field to the Collegiate circle, sending out to Speirs, whose shot at goal went wide. A period of up and down play followed and time sounded with play in midfield.
The teams were:— Centr'al A: Cooke, Lowe, Semmens, I. Speirs, T. Hennessy, B. Gunn. Collegiate A: N. Pdole, N. Speirs, M. Richards, S. Mason, J. Melrose, D. Davidson.
Messrs J. D. Gregg and H. Kelly were the umpires. In the intermediate and junior grades, as in the senior division, two points were allowed for a win and one for a draw and the winners were decided on the total number of points gained. The decisive game in the intermediate section was that between Central B and Collegiate A. Had the match gone to Central a play-off with High School A would have been necessary, but Collegiate won the game by four goals to nil after a keenly-contested struggle. The scorers were G. Cochrane (2), E. Moen and N. Lindsay. Messrs J. D. Gregg and F. Hinton were the umpires. The teams were:
Collegiate A: S. Checketts, C. Irvine. O. Cochrane, G. Cochrane, N. Lindsay. E. M°en.
Central B: Robertson, McKillop, Watson, Low, Farley, Anderson. The High School A team which won the junior grade by a margin of three points was as follows:— J. B. Smith, S. Patton, P. Skelt, R. Allan, N. Marshall, M. Hyndham. Results in the three grades were:—
