BASKETBALL
RAIN INTERFERES WITH PLAY NEWS SHIELD RETAINED BY RATA The basketball season in Invercargill ended on Saturday when a knock-out tournament and a match for the News Shield were played. Unfortunately, the afternoon was wet and the rain made it impossible for the tournament to be completed at Duke street. After the presentation of trophies to the winners of the club competitions during the season, the game for the News Shield between Rata and Collegiate was played in the Drill Hall. The members of the Rata team gave a consistent display of basketball to beat Collegiate in the News Shield game by 17 goals to 13. The standard of play was good, and although Rata was slightly superior throughout .the game was always interesting. The teams were: —
RATA—Defences, D. Thomson, J. Thomson, B. Ingram; centres, V. Fraser, A. Pittaway, A. Mcßurney; attacks, L. Mehaffey, R. Henderson, A. Macdonald. COLLEGIATE—Defences, L. Barrett, M. Kennedy, M. Aitken; centres, S. Sutherland, A. Ferguson, N. Bulman; attacks, G. Maley, W. Sadlier, M. Jensen.
Scoring was slow at the start of the game and the players seemed to take some time to settle down. However, Rata soon had a 6-3 lead as a result of consistent shooting by the attacks. Rata’s combination was very sound and was better than that of Collegiate. E. Neame was absent from Collegiate’s centre third and this undoubtedly affected the team’s combination to some extent. A. Pittaway and V. Fraser were doing much good work in the Rata centre third and the attacks saw plenty of the ball. The Collegiate attacks did not have quite so many opportunities and, although playing good basketball, found Rata’s defence difficult to penetrate. At half-time Rata was leading by 11-6. Play became faster in the second half, both teams putting forth every effort. W. Sadlier and G. Maley scored good goals for Collegiate and this reduced ffie deficit to three goals. Rata rallied strongly and brilliant shooting by L. Mehaffey enabled the team to run up a 14-8 lead. The final scores were: Rata 17, Collegiate 13.
