Cousin Betty’s Letter

My dear Cousins, ' When you read this “Toad of Toad Hall” will be over; and the Little Southlanders will have made one more successful effort to help the children of Southland. So that we may know soon just how much we have to give the Health Camp, I want all of my cousins who were selling tickets to let me have the money as. soon as possible. . . « j There are many older Southlanders who helped with ‘ Toad of Toad Hall,” and these deserve a big “thank you.” We must say “thank you” to Mr Chaplin, the producer, Mr Alex Sutherland, the stage-manager, Mr J. Colbran, in charge of the lighting, Mr M. J. Murfitt who supplied the staff for the front-of-house, Mr T. .H. Jenkin who made the caravan you admired so much, the Technical College for the loan of some of the animal heads, H. and J. Smith Ltd., the Invercargill Repertory Society, and the mothers of Little Southlanders, who helped in the dressing rooms. My thanks, too, to all the Little Southlanders who did so much to make “Toad of Toad Hall” a success. This morning, as a small reward for their hard work, The Southland Times is giving them a tea-party in H. and J. Smith’s tea-rooms. I know that all of my actors and actresses will be there.

And now I want suggestions for one more effort this year. It was felt that our main activity should benefit the children, as our page is for children, but many of my Little Southlanders feel, as I do, that at such a time we should also raise funds for patriotic purposes. So, my cousins, I am asking you for suggestions. What shall we do?

This week was a particularly busy one for your Cousin Betty, who could not find time to answer all of the letters which Mr Postman brought her. They are being held over until next week, when Between Ourselves will be published as usual. Have you any suggestions for me? Your loving t/u J • —
